2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure services including Reasearch Link Australia.

We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Does under-representation of rural complaints compromise quality of rural healthcare? Pro-rata, rural residents make fewer formal complaints about health care services than do metropolitan residents. This research investigates the reasons why, and the implications for quality improvement of rural health services. The research will also identify the most appropriate ways of engaging rural consumer participation in monitoring the quality of their health services. Based on improved indicators, the Health Services Commission and health providers will have access to a better evidence base for maximising the quality of health care and services available in rural areas.

The Evaluation of Stuctures and Processes for Effective Client, Carer and Community Outcomes: A Model for Rural Mental Health Services. The South West Healthcare Area Mental Health Service ( Warnambool) has demonstrated according to key performance indicators, an effective system of service delivery. This evaluative research project seeks to identify key components within the organisational structures and processes of a rural mental health service that contribute to these effective outcomes for clients. The research process will test these key components against other rural and urban mental health services in Victoria and will result in the development of a model for rural mental health service delivery of both local and national significance.

The feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of nurse-led models of chronic disease management in general practice. This study directly relates to the National Research Priority of 'promoting and maintaining good health' through our approach to trial a new and innovative model of chronic disease management specifically for CVD and Type II diabetes in general practice. This project aims to test a new model of health service delivery - that is, the use of a practice nurse to provide chronic disease care rather than a general practitioner. Our strategy involves collaboration with health providers, stakeholders and consumers to help achieve this by providing patient education and disease management through a registered nurse in general practice.

There is limited information on the extent and impact of intellectual disability among Indigenous Australians. The proposed project will develop a credible baseline picture of intellectual disability among Indigenous Australians in Western Australia by investigating the true prevalence, clinical and sociodemographic correlates, and morbidity and mortality patterns. It builds on a successful collaborative relationship between Disability Services Commission of WA and academia; and is unique in integrating information from multiple data sources. The findings will have direct health and social benefits by providing information on which to base appropriate health strategies and care networks to service particular needs.

Assessing the effectiveness of a Community Reinforcement and Family Training intervention for alcohol misuse with Indigenous Australians. A national benefit will be the contribution of evidence about the feasibility, utility and potential effectiveness of individual and family-based interventions for reducing alcohol-related harms and improving family functioning among Indigenous Australians. Community level benefits will include, firstly, the strengthened role and capability of participating health services and staff to utilise evidence based approaches to support Indigenous individuals and families dealing with alcohol problems. Secondly, Indigenous individuals and families participating in the Community Reinforcement and Family-based Training intervention will acquire the requisite skills and knowledge to manage the alcohol problems affecting them.

Beyond the Workforce Crisis: Advancing Conceptual Understanding in Rural and Remote Health. This research will document a theoretical framework for understanding how and why rural health differs. Understanding the causes of rural health issues will lead to more effective strategies in rural health education, research, policy, and practice. This framework has benefit to national, state and local policies and programs in rural health across the country because it will provide understanding of what works, why it works and what else is needed. Contributing to understanding the rural health context is key to improving rural health curriculum, designing meaningful research, supporting practitioners appropriately and developing rural health policies that increase the workforce, access to services and the overall rural health status.

Adaptive capabilities in the elderly during extreme heat events in South Australia. This study, using first hand accounts of experiences and perceptions of the extreme heat event of 2009 in South Australia, will provide a valuable insight into the heat adaptive capability of the ageing population, factors affecting susceptibility, and ways to curb the predicted increase in often life-threatening heat exacerbated illnesses, many of which require extended hospital stays. It is envisaged that findings will help inform health policy and contribute to the formulation of a National Heatwave Response plan. Study findings will be disseminated widely at government (state and federal), non-government, and community levels and will help to raise the awareness of heat exacerbated illness in general.

Improving health and lifestyle of indigenous Australians in the Western Desert. This program aims to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes, whilst providing a supportive environment, to better the health of the Martu people though the provision of activities and services and strengthening of partnerships between service agencies and the local community. By developing the Indigenous workforce and building the community capacity to self-manage health, a reduction in the discrepancy in health indicators between Indigenous and other Australians can be achieved. The findings from this research will provide important information regarding methods to provide for better health for Indigenous Australians and develop a template for intervention design in other remote communities.

Development and implementation of an evidence-based primary health care workforce planning model to support best practice chronic disease management. The workforce model will inform government health workforce and health services planning, with the promise of improving access to best practice care for persons with diabetes, and potentially other chronic conditions, that represent the dominant Australian health burden. It also will inform education and training of health professionals and support a more flexible response to health workforce needs. Given projected health work force shortages, flexibility in responding to health care needs will be crucial to maintaining health system capacity. The model supports system level change that will enable improved population health outcomes, reduce preventable hospital admissions and deliver production gains
