Despite no clear evidence, transgender women are told to stop their feminising estrogen treatment several weeks before gender surgery, but this causes severe 'menopausal symptoms' with hot flushes, depression and distress compounding an already stressful preparation for and recovery from major surgery. This trial will establish if continuing estrogen gel around the time of surgery is safe and effective at improving 'menopausal symptoms'.

Dr. Min Hye Kang, at The University of Western Australia, is investigating microscopic blood vessel changes that precede the onset of devastating blindness. She is also studying functional changes that occur in the retina following deprivation of its blood supply. Her research has significantly improved our understanding of cellular mechanisms that lead to blindness. It has also aided in the development of new treatment strategies for the prevention of vision loss.
The assessment of thrombosis requires the holistic evaluation of in-vivo coagulation including total clot formation. Unfortunately, current tests only evaluate the time to the start of clot formation. Experimental biomarkers such us thrombin generation, endothelial markers, microparticles and microRNA may provide a better framework for evaluating thrombotic risk. The Fontan procedure is the last of a series of operations offered to children born with hearts with a single pumping chamber. Without this procedure these children would die, however, with this procedure their long-term expectations are still uncertain. This study will investigate the long-term outcomes of the Australian and New Zealand Fontan population and how these outcomes can be improved.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations are an important cause of stroke and brain bleeds. In many patients such a stroke can result in severe disability or death. Current management involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and endovascular treatments and carry a high risk of complications. This research project suggests a new form of treatment whereby irradiating the vascular malformation a medication could be administered to cause targeted clotting of the malformation.

Predicting the cardiovascular risk of an individual remains challenging despite the current advances and to date, there is no available laboratory testing that accurately reflects an individual’s clotting profile. This prospective study aims to address this with the use of global coagulation assay as a novel tool for individual cardiovascular risk prognostication and management, as well as demonstrate the compensatory mechanism between the different arms of Virchow's triad.
Tissue factor is a central and major player in the clotting process. It exists in both active and inactive forms. The active form initiates clot formation. How it gets activated is one of the most important unanswered questions in this area of research. Our aim is to discover tissue factorÍs mechanism of activation. The outcome will provide more specific targets for therapeutic drug development for cardiovascular disease, strokes and deep venous thrombosis.
