Rethinking multiculturalism/reassessing multicultural education. No study has systematically explored the links between multicultural policy and educational practice within the context of a thorough understanding of the cultural complexity of contemporary Australia and the conceptual framework of multicultural discourse. This project offers significant national and community benefits in its interrogation of the goals of multiculturalism and the nature of educational programs. Its informed approach to action research will assist in the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning in diverse communities in urban and rural settings. The resultant enhancement of teacher quality will improve the educational outcomes of all students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Teacher Professional Development in International Vocational Education and Training. Teachers in the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector are facing significant professional challenges under the conditions of internationalisation, global skills mobility, the 'Asian Century' and the sector's compliance culture. This project investigates the impacts of these demands upon the professional development needs and practices of VET teachers, an under-theorised and under-researched area. In so doing, the project will provide unique data for developing concepts, policies and practices that enhance VET teachers' professional development under changed circumstances. It will also produce an innovative conceptual framework for examining teacher professional development in response to internationalisation.

The Lexicon Project: Analysing pedagogical naming systems from different cultures to reconceptualise classroom practice and advance educational theory. Classrooms remain the principal site of institutionalised learning. Their cultural specificity poses challenges for international comparative research. New approaches are needed. Internationally, our educational theories, research and descriptions of practice are framed in English, which names some aspects of the classroom, but ignores key aspects named in other languages. This limits our capacity to access, connect and adapt the wisdom of other cultures. The Lexicon Project will initiate cross-cultural dialogue to identify pedagogical terms from selected Asian and European educational communities and use these as analytical tools to categorise, interrogate and enrich our classroom practice, classroom research, and educational theorising.

Can educators make a difference: experiencing democracy in education. International research has found that teachers and students understand democracy as only the obligation to vote and obey the law. Knowing how democracy is understood within the Australian education system will have great benefit to the development of appropriate school civic and citizenship programs to promote and strengthen our democratic society.
