SToP-C will investigate whether a significant reduction in hepatitis C infection in NSW prisons is possible with a “treatment as prevention” strategy. It will treat prisoners for hep C infection both to improve their own health and to make onward transmission to others less likely. There is currently a lack of available effective strategies; however through delivery of simple, effective new therapies this world-first trial offers significant opportunities to reduce the burden of liver disease.

Healthcare associated infections are a major challenge for hospitals. Infections can spread via the patient environment, because colonized patients and staff can contaminate surfaces and equipment with micro-organisms. Cleaning is a vital component of patient care, but is a complex process with little real evidence to inform practice. This project will take a targeted approach to improving hospital cleaning to reduce infection rates; and examine the cost-effectiveness of this approach.

Heart disease accounts for a great number of deaths and admissions to hospital. We aim to improve ongoing prevention for people with heart disease by supporting general practices to use their data and provide more systematic care. We propose a randomised trial to determine whether a practice level strategy reduces cardiovascular events and hospitalisations and saves money. The research will directly inform government decision-making and policy regarding primary care incentive payment programs.

Many patients presenting to hospital with chest pain are admitted for observation. However improvements in cardiac testing mean ruling out an acute cardiac event early is more accurate and quicker. This project will examine the utility, safety, cost-benefits and acceptability of a Rapid Access Cardiology Clinic model of care for patients with chest pain. Their provision could reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and provide more convenient outpatient care for patients with chest pain.

Conducted in partnership with Diabetes Australia (Queensland, Victoria, WA) and Roche Diagnostics, this research will evaluate the 'real world' implementation of a telehealth program, already successfully trialled, which has the potential to provide a low cost and effective program to a large number of Australians with type 2 diabetes.

This proposal aims to evaluate and improve upon immunisation policy and programs for the prevention of severe childhood influenza and pertussis. Using our successful Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) network in 6 major children's hospitals across Australia, we will identify gaps in the evidence base needed to better control influenza and pertussis and in particular to ensure programs are delivered in such a way so as to address health inequalities.
