The modelling and control of complex and highly resonant systems is of increasing engineering importance due to their occurence in a wide variety of emerging areas in aerospace, acoustics, robotics and ``smart'' structures. At the same time, effective tools tailored towards identifying the necessary models, and synthesising the necessary controllers for these systems are in their infancy. This arises from special difficulties encountered via the high dimensionality of the structures involved. This research project will employ new methods from the fields of robust control and multivariable system identification theory to lead to new and high performance solutions in this area.Read moreRead less

Control systems theory provides principles and methods for design of complex engineering systems that automatically maintain desired performance despite changes in their environment (e.g. autopilot in an aircraft). This field is facing many new exciting challenges at the dawn of new millenium, such as design of complex engineering systems in possibly networked, asynchronous and distributed environments. The network will play a major role in addressing these challenges by providing a national research focus, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of people and ideas. By delivering a National Graduate School, the network will enhance learning conditions for graduate students. Moreover, it will provide an important catalyst between Australian universities and industry. This initiative will be essential in assessing the present state of control research in Australia and drafting a detailed plan for the network's leading research role in the future. The work has the potential for very substantial benefit to Australia. Novel stress corrosion cracking resistant tempers with improved strength have the potential for widespread application in the aircraft industry. Since the patent for the interrupted ageing process is held by CSIRO there is the potential for substantial economic benefit to Australia from the licensing of the novel tempers world-wide. Additionally, it would be possible to develop the novel tempers in-situ on existing aircraft structures to improve their performance. This would be of particular benefit to the Royal Australian Airforce with its fleet of ageing aircraft.Read moreRead less

A New Approach to Sampled-Data Control Design for Nonlinear Systems. This project aims to exploit new sampling and sampled-data modelling insights to bridge the continuous/sampled-data gap in the control of nonlinear systems. The goal is to investigate the impact of these insights on the control design problem and provide a new class of digital control laws for continuous time non-linear systems.
Robust control of power electronics and drives: a synthesis of traditional and model predictive control approaches. This project aims to generate high-performance strategies for the control of power converters. Through the combination of traditional and modern approaches, the project will develop methods which are more reliable and give better energy efficiency than current state of the art techniques.
Robust control of mobile networked systems. The conceptual advances with new design rules are to be developed in the area of robust control of mobile networked systems. A major benefit of the research to be carried out in this project will be its direct application to industrial control problems in the defence, communications and robotics industries and to the management of the environment.
