Noise control in aircraft and motor vehicles. The principal aim of this collaborative program between Australian and Japanese research teams is to tackle the complex issue of using active noise control systems focussing "zones of quiet" at passengers in aircraft and motor vehicles. The work has important implications for increased comfort of air travel and a safer environment for drivers of heavy vehicles. The outcomes will be the development of "smart skins" for application to aircraft and veh .... The outcomes will be the development of "smart skins" for application to aircraft and vehicle cabin interiors to actively control of interior noise. This will be achieved by combining the Japanese team's "structural wavenumber sensors" and the Adelaide team's "virtual microphones".

Virtual acoustic sensors for active noise control systems. Traditional active noise control systems achieve the greatest noise reduction at the microphone error sensor(s). It is often desirable to achieve the maximum noise reduction remote from such sensors. Virtual acoustic sensors for active noise control systems. Traditional active noise control systems achieve the greatest noise reduction at the microphone error sensor(s). It is often desirable to achieve the maximum noise reduction remote from such sensors. Virtual sensing technology, the focus of this application, has the promise to replace traditional microphone sensing by projecting the zone of quiet away from the sensor microphones and directly into the ear of the user of the active noise control system. This will revolutionise the sensing used in active noise control systems, and in doing so allow the realisation of active noise control in applications that have previously been infeasible.

Linear programming approach to nonlinear deterministic and stochastic control problems: perturbations methods and numerical analysis. The proposed research will significantly advance knowledge by creating new analytical and numerical methods for tackling complex nonlinear control problems arising in many applications. The study's outputs will lead to a deeper understanding of fundamental issues in mathematical modelling. Collaboration with renowned researchers will further improve Australia's standing in the international research community. Also their visits may further promote research both within and outside the host institution. In particular, lectures and seminars that they will deliver will be transmitted to Australian universities participating in the Access Grid Room Project.

Extraction of Electronic Evidence from Telephone Conversations Carried by the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The national benefits of this project are that it meets the National Priority of Safeguarding Australia and the results of this project can serve as a major input into a current Australian Government and Defence initiatives in electronic evidence and intelligence collection. It will play a significant part in satisfying the Australian community that steps are being taken to develop techniques for monitoring the criminal use of the Internet for communication and transfer of information. It will serve to develop niche Australian research expertise in this very specialized international field.

ARC Molecular and Materials Structure Research Network. The Network will build powerful e-Science resources for the structural sciences. Collaborative remote access will be developed for sophisticated instrumentation, including instruments planned for the Replacement Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database service with cross disciplinary content and versatile visualisation and analysis capabilities will further exemplify smart information use. The internet services will ultimately harness the Grid, enabling linkage into other national and international Grid systems. Encompassing physics, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry, and catalysing interaction across these disciplines, the MMSN will impact all five National Research Priority 3 goals.

ARC Research Network for a Secure Australia. The Research Network for a Secure Australia (RNSA) is a multi-disciplinary collaboration established to strengthen Australia's research capacity for protecting critical infrastructure from natural or human-caused disasters including terrorist acts. The RNSA will facilitate a knowledge-sharing network for research organisations, government and the private sector to develop research tools and methods to mitigate emerging safety and security issues relating to critical infrastructure. World-leaders with extensive national and international linkages in relevant scientific, engineering and technological research will lead this collaboration. The RNSA will launch various activities to foster research collaboration and nurture young investigators.
