    Summary
Characterisation of Internet Traffic Matrices. The benefits to the community of characterisation of Internet traffic matrices arise because this information is used in the design of efficient and reliable networks. This is a genuine example of using the data we have more cleverly, rather than throwing money at a problem. Better information will result in the Internet becoming more efficient, and therefore cheaper, and at the same time more reliable.

The Internet is by its nature international, and so any such effort to model and understand it must be somewhat international. However, Australia has longer network paths to the rest of the world and the routing protocols' operation depends on this latency. This emphasizes why Australia must participate in such research: to ensure that Australian issues are considered when Internet protocols are designed. This project will directly deliver a more robust Internet for Australia, international exposure in an area of general interest, the potential for patents, and the development of commercially valuable expertise and measurement infrastructure.

Linear programming approach to nonlinear deterministic and stochastic control problems: perturbations methods and numerical analysis. The proposed research will significantly advance knowledge by creating new analytical and numerical methods for tackling complex nonlinear control problems arising in many applications. The study's outputs will lead to a deeper understanding of fundamental issues in mathematical modelling. Collaboration with renowned researchers will further improve Australia's standing in the international research community. Also their visits may further promote research both within and outside the host institution. In particular, lectures and seminars that they will deliver will be transmitted to Australian universities participating in the Access Grid Room Project.

Fundamental research into physics always leads to unpredictable technological breakthroughs. Fundamental physics research has led to the development of transistors, world wide web, carbon dating, cancer treatments, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, satellites and many applications too numerous to mention. The collaboration will allow Australia access to technologies, research infrastructure, expertise and intellectual knowledge that wouldn't be available otherwise. This will enable Australian institutions to pursue breakthrough science, to develop frontier technologies and to have a great impact in the international scientific community. It will also provide advance training in simulation and high-performance computing to postgraduates and research associates.

In order to test fundamental quantum field theories, which underlie all physical phenomena from galaxy formation to the behaviour of biological system, it is necessary to be able to solve these theories in all regions of interest. In particular, solving theories in the nonperturbative regime has proven a difficult and challenging problem. The most successful theory that we have in physics is perturbative quantum electrodynamics, even though in the nonperturbative regime it is widely believed to be a trivial or pathological theory. We will build on exciting recent successes in this field and use advanced supercomputers to understand the detailed nonperturbative behaviour of quantum electrodynamics.

Normal forms and Chern-Moser connection in the study of Cauchy-Riemann Manifolds. This research project is aimed at a systematic study of Cauchy-Riemann manifolds, their holomorphic mappings and automorphisms, by means of a unifying approach based on Chern-Moser type normal forms. This research project is aimed at a systematic study of Cauchy-Riemann manifolds, their holomorphic mappings and automorphisms, by means of a unifying approach based on Chern-Moser type normal forms. The importance of Cauchy-Riemann manifolds stems from the fact that they bridge complex structure and holomorphy with the Riemannian nature of real manifolds. Construction of an analogue of the Chern-Moser normal form for multicodimensional Levi-nondegenerate CR-manifolds and extension of CR-mappings between them are major goals in complex analysis. Identification of Chern-Moser chains and equivariant linearisation of isotropy automorphisms are major goals in geometry.
