This project will examine temporal coordination demands of busy critical care environments, with the goal of developing better models and tools for evaluating the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) innovation. Millions of dollars can be wasted on healthcare ICT updates when the nature of critical care work, the means of communication, and temporal coordination demands are not fully understood. The outcome of this project will be better conceptual and computational tools for assessing the impact of ICT innovation on safety-critical systems such as healthcare, so providing more cost-effective ICT solutions where there is rapidly-evolving ICT innovation.Read moreRead less
Computational tools to analyse and exploit the social media revolution. We aim to create technologies to analyse social media communities, which are rapidly growing in reach, complexity, and content produced and shared. Powerful techniques to tap this resource will lead to commercial outcomes for marketing and search industries, alongside deeper insight into the cultural and social impact of this Internet revolution.
Improving the Effectiveness of Conceptual Model Validation Work. Errors or omissions in conceptual models often lead to significant problems when information systems are being built. Prior research has shown the cost of fixing the consequences of such errors or omissions grows exponentially as a function of how late they are discovered. Thus, significant economic benefits arise if they are identified early in the system development process. The project outcomes will facilitate early prevention ....Improving the Effectiveness of Conceptual Model Validation Work. Errors or omissions in conceptual models often lead to significant problems when information systems are being built. Prior research has shown the cost of fixing the consequences of such errors or omissions grows exponentially as a function of how late they are discovered. Thus, significant economic benefits arise if they are identified early in the system development process. The project outcomes will facilitate early prevention and detection of errors of omissions in conceptual models. They will also contribute to attainment of the national priority goal of smart information use through improved data management.Read moreRead less
A Methodology for Designing Information Systems based on Situational Theories of Agency. Information systems (IS) are part of work systems that are goal-directed. Existing methodologies for designing IS implicitly assume that goal-directed behaviour is enabled by deliberation upon abstract models (the 'thinker' metaphor). Information systems (IS) are part of work systems that are goal-directed. Existing methodologies for designing IS implicitly assume that goal-directed behaviour is enabled by deliberation upon abstract models (the 'thinker' metaphor). Recent work in robotics and artificial intelligence has tested an alternative theory of goal-directed behaviour that emphasises reactive responses to situations (the 'routine' metaphor). We will refine and test a new IS design methodology based on this situational theory and show that it can produce effective IS designs, applicable to time-constrained routine operational domains, which are radically different from those produced using existing methodologies.Read moreRead less
The Impact of Information about Data Quality on Decision Making. Data quality problems are widespread in practice and have significant economic impacts. The development of theoretically sound data quality tags and understanding how they impact decision outcomes and processes will lead to improved data quality management within Australian organisations and more efficient and effective decision making. These issues constitute an important area of information technology research. Outcomes from the project will enhance Australia's research standing and contribute to university teaching and researcher training.Read moreRead less
Development and Validation of Conceptual Models and Transferable Architectures to Support Self-Sustainable Community Portals. There is growing worldwide interest in the study of community portals because of their potential to bridge the 'digital divide' and promote community innovation. However, community portals are still poorly understood and often fail due to lack of adequate sustainability mechanisms. The proposed research extends our knowledge about community portals by developing formal conceptual models and transferable architectures for community portals. The project aims to use emerging modelling techniques to model the complex environment of a local community and derive an architecture based on that model. The project outcomes will include a conceptual model and transferable architecture for community portals.Read moreRead less
A Formal Approach to Resource Allocation in Service Oriented Marketplaces. There was a strong opinion at the 2004 World Economic Forum that interorganisational computing was a major factor in productivity improvements underpinning continuing economic growth in the developed world, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. The results of the proposed research are directed to advanced systems of this type, and will add momentum to Australia's Information Technology research community. ....A Formal Approach to Resource Allocation in Service Oriented Marketplaces. Increased international recognition will positively impact on future interactions with the service composition research groups in Europe and the USA.Read moreRead less
Formalising and automating the elicitation and reconciliation of requirements from multiple stakeholders. It is well recognised that requirements specifications are often error-prone and that it is much cheaper to detect and fix these errors early in the software development life cycle than later. It is well recognised that requirements specifications are often error-prone and that it is much cheaper to detect and fix these errors early in the software development life cycle than later. A major problem with requirements determination is that each and every stakeholder has his/her own representation of the enterprise reality. This project seeks to take these views and use set-theoretical techniques from Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to automatically generate and compare the underlying conceptual models. A process model based on FCA has been proposed which we will extend and empirically evaluate in this project. The result will be a more rigorous and yet pragmatic approach to requirements engineering which offers the greatest economic leverage.Read moreRead less
Assistive technologies for autism support harnessing social media. This project aims to tap social media to revolutionize early intervention therapy for children with autism. By creating open, extensible software for therapy delivery, and tools for parents to access high quality information and support, we will provide children a greater chance to achieve their potential and much-needed relief for parents and carers.
