Coach My Ride: Mentorable Interfaces to support Older Australians' Mobility. This project aims to co-design new interfaces to support older Australians to collaboratively learn the use of automated vehicles. We will seek to understand the needs, expectations, and challenges of urban and rural residents, and the peer support strategies they deploy to learn technology. Mobility is key to the wellbeing of older people, but automated vehicles that are too complex will fail to deliver their promise of independent ageing. Outcomes will be a new theory of collaborative learning and new mentorable interfaces to allow older adults to mentor each other to access and use new mobility solutions. This will contribute to narrow the digital and mobility gap improving the independence, safety and wellbeing of ageing Australians.

This project aims to generate novel product design guidelines for developing safer controllers for use by potentially stressed individuals in high-risk situations. It will do this by generating specific insights and verifying generalisable solutions from the context of total artificial heart recipients –who must engage with critical controllers constantly. This project expects to generate new knowledge in design by establishing a new research topic around an under-examined user cohort. Expected outcomes of this project include interaction design theory developments and improved controller design techniques. This should provide significant benefits and competitive advantages by lowering stress and improving safety across a range of contexts.

Maturing design-led innovation processes with motivational models. This project aims to bring together design innovation with software engineering ensuring software is engaging, utilising methods and processes from design. Engaging software is important if it is to be taken up by the intended users. The outcome of the proposal will be new methods such as emotional goal models guiding key stages of the software engineering lifecycle, especially requirements elicitation, software design, implementation and evaluation, with a focus on assessing adoption over time. The benefit of the research is intended to be threefold: increased digital inclusion by more Australians engaging with the digital economy; better acceptance of developed software by consumers; and new methods for Australian software developers.

Wearable displays for high-tempo work in mission-critical worlds. This project aims to investigate how effectively head-worn display technology can support mobile work in complex high-tempo environments where workers must complete tasks quickly, handle competing demands, and manage interruptions. The project will draw on field investigations to specify functions and formats for head-worn displays, and will conduct laboratory and simulation studies to test the relative advantages of head-worn displays versus tablet computers. Work environments benefitting from the project should include emergency response, triage, defence, and field service industries.

Enabling Situated Immersive Science Collaboration with Remote Sensing Data . This project aims to help scientists communicate and collaborate in immersive environments. Fieldwork is more valuable to scientists than looking at abstract remote data, but expense, danger, or inaccessible locations often stand in the way. This project will address this issue by researching and designing immersive environments that combine remote data with visualisations and new interaction tools for science teams to make sense of spatial and temporal aspects of data. Outcomes will include new presentation and interaction methods, an evaluation with geoscientists, and a framework for designing interactive systems that enable situated interactions. Benefits will include helping Australian scientists overcome distance in their research.

Creating evidence-based public open space standards for apartment residents. This project aims to examine how to create public open space for apartment residents. It will (1) identify how apartment dwellers use public open space, including which spaces are used and why; and (2) test whether public open space use compensates for reduced apartment/building space. With less private space, apartment residents are assumed to rely on public spaces for physical, social and recreational activities. Yet .... Yet little is known about which spaces they use and why, and what they would prefer. Expected outcomes include tailored, equitable evidence-based recommendations for public open space planning and apartment design guidelines. Benefits include the delivery of sustainable high-density precincts that cater to community needs.

This project will directly engage with the community through the development of an innovative public participatory mapping tool ("Map My Say") to evaluate community experiences of infill development and to identify the determinants of community support for, or resistance to, densification in urban development sites correlated with public transport. The findings of the project will support future planning and land use decisions related to creating resilient urban environments and provide decision planning tools to support appropriate solutions for urban communities. Working with our industry partners the findings will be used to directly inform the planning and design of future Metronet station precincts in Western Australia.
