Linkage Projects - Grant ID: LP110200971

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $475,000.00
    Summary
Improving yield through image-based structural analysis of cereals. Feeding an increasing world population under the threat of climate change requires the development of new plant varieties capable of delivering higher yield in more marginal conditions. This project will develop image-based technologies for accurately estimating plant yield which will improve the effectiveness of plant breeding processes.

    Summary
Joint facility for genome analysis. This project will establish a joint facility for genome analysis supported by the Universities of Adelaide and South Australia, the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics and the Australian Wine Research Institute. The facility will purchase novel equipment for high-throughput gene selection and screening, advanced DNA and protein imaging and a dedicated reconfigurable computing platform for advanced bioinformatic analysis. The equipment has been targeted to overcome technical barriers that limit the rapid adoption of genome discovery projects in South Australia. This facility will result in new plant gene discovery and improved understanding of fundamental plant processes.

    Summary
Field and quasi-field phenotyping for the quantitative characterisation of wheat yield under stress. The project aims to develop state-of-the-art monitoring and profiling capabilities for the quantitative assessment of plant growth performance in field and quasi-field environments under the abiotic stress conditions of drought and nutrient deficiency. This project involves the design and use of high resolution but low budget imaging stations to capture the growth of cereal plants in competitive environments. Novel computer vision and image processing techniques will be applied to the image data to quantitatively characterise the success of genetic varieties to tolerate abiotic stress environments under actual field conditions.
