Summary
Radiation therapy is a highly effective cancer treatment with extremely high doses delivered using very complex treatment machines. Unfortunately errors have occurred resulting in cases of patient death and mistreatment. We have developed a novel method to assess the treatment delivery in real-time to prevent errors. The method uses imaging devices that are already present on the treatment machine meaning that this method could have a major impact on patient safety in modern radiation therapy.

This project will investigate the utility of grid computing in the detection of breast cancer from magnetic resonance (MR) images. The large quantity of data acquired using MR imaging is difficult for clinicians to review and the cost of missed or incorrect detection is high. To provide rapid visualisation and assessment of the acquired data, grid computing will be used in conjunction with interactive visualisation with haptic feedback. Grid computing experience and haptic device expertise will be achieved via Swedish collaborators. The successful outcome of this project will be software for the production of 3D colour-coded breast images in which suspicious regions are highlighted and can be physically interrogated using the haptic device.Read moreRead less

Current visual surveillance systems can track people in an area only if complete camera coverage is provided. This project will develop a visual surveillance system able to track and record people's movements in a public building requiring only limited visual coverage. We will propose novel ways of matching images of a single individual from distant cameras by using features such as color histograms decomposed for the different body parts, estimated height, and build type. Creating a record with this tracking information will effectively support security officers in the identification of responsible parties in the event of an offence.Read moreRead less

The proposed project involves cutting edge research in a field of great international significance. The most obvious benefits will be international acclaim and the potential to patent, develop and ultimately export technology and systems for the distribution of high dimensional multimedia content. Outcomes from the project may support the growth of surveillance and networking equipment industries within Australia. One application considered explicitly within the project is the demonstration of a new surveillance oriented approach to both distance education and pre-recorded educational content, based upon dense multimedia sampling and our proposed paradigm for efficient distribution to interactive clients.Read moreRead less

Surveillance of moving objects is critical in numerous applications such as detection and recognition of motor vehicles. It is important for detection to be fast and accurate with low cost. In this project, we aim to implement a surveillance system consisting of an efficient algorithm on a PC network with a camera. Our detection algorithm will be achieved with an advanced and computationally powerful image representation for fast computation. Its accuracy will be enhanced by adapting a well recognized theory for fast removal of image noise. Our implementation on the PC network will provide a flexible and extensible platform for parallel computing to further reduce detection time while keeping costs low.Read moreRead less
Multiview video coding using cuboid data compression. This project investigates novel approaches to multiview video coding that use new data compression techniques and explicit occlusion handling. These new approaches complement the state-of-the-art, improving interactivity with instantaneous view change and VCR functionality, reducing encoding complexity, and increasing compression efficiency.
A Computer-Aided Cartooning System. This project is aimed at developing a computer-aided system to accelerate main image-related processes in cartoon production. Using such a system, many of the tedious and repetitive tasks can be performed semi-automatically. The project is focused on accurate representation and matching of shapes. New vectorization methods based on projection onto convex sets (POCS), and new matching methods based on multi-stage hierarchical structures will be developed.
