Enhancing computer user productivity of integrated enterprise wide systems: an intervention study. This project addresses a critical issue in IT investment and productivity. Current theoretical models of user training and acceptance have not contributed to the effectiveness of implementing new integrated enterprise wide systems. This study will identify key indiviudal differences that predict user motivation to learn and utilize such systems under mandatory conditions. A longitudinal study in two field settings will test the impact of selected interventions on task performance following training. The outcomes will inform Australian industry on models of effective implementation and provide guidance to increase the productivity of personnel using software systems.

A Methodology for Designing Information Systems based on Situational Theories of Agency. Information systems (IS) are part of work systems that are goal-directed. Existing methodologies for designing IS implicitly assume that goal-directed behaviour is enabled by deliberation upon abstract models (the 'thinker' metaphor). Recent work in robotics and artificial intelligence has tested an alternative theory of goal-directed behaviour that emphasises reactive responses to situations (the 'routine' metaphor). We will refine and test a new IS design methodology based on this situational theory and show that it can produce effective IS designs, applicable to time-constrained routine operational domains, which are radically different from those produced using existing methodologies.

    Summary
Systems to Support Knowledge Creation in Learning Organisations. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems .... The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems. An interpretive study will determine how the systems can contribute to organisational learning, performance, and responsiveness to change. The outcomes will inform the designers of such systems and show Australian organisations how to gain competitive advantage by expanding their capacity to learn.

Identity fraud is recognised as a serious and significant problem in Australia by Government and industry, with estimates of losses ranging up to $4 billion per annum. This project aims to research identity fraud from an organisational and social perspective by investigating control, management and policy alternatives. Outcomes will include conceptual, effects and costing models of identity fraud, successful strategies for organisational management control, new techniques to improve prevention and detection, and comparative evaluations of social, legal and privacy implications. The research program will provide the missing research partnership that will inform control, management and policy decisions of national significance.
