The ability to analyse the performance of complex systems and protocols is a vital part of the development of large-scale computer applications. Methods that improve the effectiveness of the analysis task would increase the competitiveness of the software industry, and would attract future development work (in complex systems) to Australia. The results of this project will have a direct influence on currently available design tools; the fact that Australian institutions will be (in part) responsible for key theoretical results in this growing field will strengthen Australia's position worldwide as an international centre for computer science.Read moreRead less

Summary
Development of a High Performance Computing Cluster for ac3 Research. This application proposes the development of a 350 Gflop Beowulf parallel computing cluster that will support high profile research of international significance, spanning the science and technology spectrum, and according with national priority areas identified by Government and the ARC. The facility will provide an urgently needed boost in both aggregate and peak HPC capacity in NSW, thereby facilitating the solution of the ....Development of a High Performance Computing Cluster for ac3 Research. This application proposes the development of a 350 Gflop Beowulf parallel computing cluster that will support high profile research of international significance, spanning the science and technology spectrum, and according with national priority areas identified by Government and the ARC. The facility will provide an urgently needed boost in both aggregate and peak HPC capacity in NSW, thereby facilitating the solution of the next generation of computational research problems. In doing so, it will underpin innovation by world ranking groups in diverse fields such as photonics, complex/intelligent systems, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, quantum physics and chemistry, engineering, and environmental modelling.Read moreRead less
A framework for optimisation and concurrent design in photonics. This project will develop a concurrent engineering framework for the design and optimisation of photonic devices, specifically microstructured fibres and Bragg gratings. This project will develop a concurrent engineering framework for the design and optimisation of photonic devices, specifically microstructured fibres and Bragg gratings. Novel fibre designs and pulse manipulation grating designs for the telecommunications, automotive and sensing sectors will be developed. New algorithms for the analysis of perturbations and imperfections arising from manufacturing processes will be incorporated into an integrated optimisation framework that uses evolutionary algorithms. Neural networks will be trained to learn the underlying relationships between structural design parameters and device performance parameters. The new concurrent engineering framework will also identify the critical points in fabrication technologies impeding further progress.Read moreRead less

The mission of the Centre is to stimulate research in mathematical and statistical modelling of complex systems and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas and techniques. The specific objectives are
- to formulate and analyse mathematical and statistical models for natural and artificial complex systems,
- to use these models to develop an understanding of the behaviour of these systems
- to incorporate this understanding into strategies for management and control.Read moreRead less

Recent advances in network bandwidth and processing power have led to the emergence of real time multimedia streaming applications and it is expected that such applications will become an even more dominant source of traffic in future computer networks. Quality of service studies for real-time applications in high-speed networks, point to the importance of the transport layer functionality in admission control, monitoring end-to-end delays, and network bandwidth adaptability. The project will study, design, develop and analyse a comprehensive model for the virtual transport layer to satisfy the necessary quality of service requirements for the next generation of multimedia-based applications.Read moreRead less
