Mathematical Sciences foster interdisciplinary collaboration and underpin fundamental understanding of significant national/international research priorities in science and technology. This world-class team will advance knowledge in modelling complex systems ensuring the competitiveness of Australian research in this important field. A key outcome is a multi-scale computational strategy that can be used by engineers in Australia and France to simulate transport phenomena in porous media, which have significant environmental impact. The research will lead to publications in scientific journals and communications at national/international conferences. Research training of postdocs and PhD students is another excellent outcome of the project.Read moreRead less
Qualitative and quantitative modelling of hydraulic fracturing of brittle materials. Few technologies have caused more concern in the general population than the so called hydraulic fracturing technique, applied to enhance the hydraulic conductivity of resource-bearing rocks by injecting high pressure fluids. The concern revolves around uncertainty with leakage of used chemicals to overlying aquifers, unwanted seismic events and surface subsidence. This research, combining experimental and computational investigations, aims to establish fundamental understanding of key processes controlling fracture formation in brittle materials (coal seams and porous rocks) under the action of hydraulic fracturing. The research outcomes will help to assess and minimise the risks associated with the hydraulic fracturing technology. Read moreRead less
Role of modulating water wave groups in enhancing air-water fluxes. This project aims to investigate the importance of the group structure and breaking of wind-generated waves of various scales in the air-water exchange of mass, momentum and energy. This project expects to generate new understanding in the area of air-water exchanges using an innovative approach based on direct numerical simulation of wind over unsteady water wave groups for a wide range of wind speed and wave steepness conditions.
Expected outcomes of this project include generating fundamental knowledge of the unresolved physics and new parameterisations for air-water exchange rates. This will deliver more accurate and more comprehensive forecast models for weather, inland and ocean waterways, and numerous industrial processes.Read moreRead less
Physical processes in complex coastal reef environments: the dynamics of wave- and tide-dominated systems. Coastal reefs are ubiquitous features of Australia's coastline, yet the dynamics controlling water motion on reefs still remain poorly understood. This project will significantly advance our understanding of coastal processes within reef environments, thus improving predictions of the impacts of extreme storms and climate change on our coasts.
Paving the way: an experimental approach to the mathematical modelling and design of permeable pavements. The intelligent use of permeable pavements will enable restoration of degraded land corridors. Collection and treatment of stormwater via filtration through porous media will improve water quality in urban environments and will also control flooding. The integration of ecology and urban living will present a revolutionary way to revitalize cities.

Simulation code verification through program testing and debugging is crucially important, but is tedious and often difficult. A novel approach will be studied in this project. The approach involves detecting coding errors through back-to-back testing using two independently implemented versions of a given mathematical model, and isolating the coding errors through systematically analysing the test error signal generated (the difference between the outputs of the two models). This is possible because one of the two versions is implemented in such a way that the test error carries an easily identifiable feature. This project could revolutionize the area of model verification.Read moreRead less

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that 'warming of the climate system is unequivocal' and there is high probability it is anthropogenic. In response to the growing awareness of climate change, there is an expansion in Australia in the use of renewable energy resources in electricity generation, albeit from a low base. The various renewable energy systems have differing patterns of availability and volatility, and it is difficult to determine the right mixture to best match the demand. It is imperative that future growth be structured so that both maximum grid penetration, and required greenhouse gas reductions be attained. Read moreRead less

Climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is one of the most serious challenges facing mankind. Substantial reductions in emissions must be achieved, with responsibility shared by all industrial sectors. Wastewater systems contribute to GHG emission through not only energy consumption but also direct emissions of fugitive GHG such as methane and nitrous oxide. This project aims to deliver the urgently needed knowledge and technology support to the Australian wastewater industry to achieve reductions in fugitive emissions. The research will also provide support to the greenhouse office via more reliable estimation of such emissions.Read moreRead less

Pollutants in wastewater undergo complex changes in sewers, leading to the production and release of odorous and corrosive compounds. Despite major efforts and expenditure by water utilities to mitigate these problems, odorous emissions from sewers are still commonly occurring in urban areas. Furthermore, the value of public assets is significantly diminished due to sewer corrosion, costing hundreds of millions of dollars a year in Australia alone. This project is a major joint effort by the Australian water industry and world-leading scientists to generate advanced knowledge and develop effective technologies for optimal odour and corrosion management in sewers, delivering large social, environmental and economic benefits.Read moreRead less
