Our research will enhance both journalistic and policymaking practice by providing comprehensive, contemporary data about the relationships between journalism practices and Indigenous policymaking processes. We will examine media texts, policy documents, public statements and journalists' and policymakers' local knowledge. The ways in which Indigenous issues are discussed through the public media have concrete policy outcomes that impact on the lives of Indigenous Australians, on the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and ultimately on Australia as a nation. As such, the research falls within theNational Research Priority area of maintaining good health, by aiming to strengthen Australia's social and economic fabric.Read moreRead less

The building blocks of meaning: a linguistic approach. This project will investigate how complex meanings are built up from more basic building blocks, and to what extent basic meanings differ between different languages, cultures, and geographical zones. The project is expected to lead to significant advances in the scientific knowledge of language. Nothing comparable has been attempted before. Expected outcomes include a rich harvest of new knowledge, digital tools to assist with analysing and ....The building blocks of meaning: a linguistic approach. This project will investigate how complex meanings are built up from more basic building blocks, and to what extent basic meanings differ between different languages, cultures, and geographical zones. The project is expected to lead to significant advances in the scientific knowledge of language. Nothing comparable has been attempted before. Expected outcomes include a rich harvest of new knowledge, digital tools to assist with analysing and translating complex meanings, and ongoing international collaborations. This will provide significant benefits such as enabling messaging and communication in education, health care, service delivery and international affairs to be clearer, more accessible and more translatable.Read moreRead less
Flying networks: airborne sensing for environmental monitoring and disaster response. Airborne sensing technology is ideally suited to Australian geography and can be highly effective for monitoring disasters, surveillance, and precision agriculture. There are ample opportunities for local information technology companies and start-ups to create innovative airborne sensing applications for both the Australian and overseas markets.

Traditional journalistic practices in reporting suicide and mental health/illness issues are under strong challenge from a variety of groups, including medical/health professionals, and people diagnosed with mental illness. The project investigates the changing dynamics and hotly contested interplay between media, journalistic, medical, health professional and lay discourses about these issues, using in-depth interviews, focus groups and media analyses. How do media label events and people, and how do various audiences interpret and manage this information? Key outcomes include theoretically informed understandings of the positions of key stakeholders and policy advice for government and health professionals in planning communication strategies.Read moreRead less
Fabrication and monolithic integration of III-V semiconductor photonic devices using impurity-free interdiffusion. The objective of this project is to achieve the integration of GaAs- and InP-based photonic devices using the atomic interdiffusion technique. Furthermore, elucidating the more complicated interdiffusion mechanism in the InP-based system will be a precursor ....Fabrication and monolithic integration of III-V semiconductor photonic devices using impurity-free interdiffusion. The objective of this project is to achieve the integration of GaAs- and InP-based photonic devices using the atomic interdiffusion technique. The project will use the key understanding of the atomic relocation process in the GaAs-based system, with novel laser designs. Furthermore, elucidating the more complicated interdiffusion mechanism in the InP-based system will be a precursor to device integration. This project also aims to understand the interdiffusion mechanism in quantum dot structures, which are important for high performance optoelectronic devices. The fabrication of novel photonic integrated circuits (PICs) will generate patentable technology, and enhance Australia's semiconductor optoelectronic and photonic industry.Read moreRead less
