Summary
Minimising transaction costs in Murray-Darling Basin water reform. Transaction costs provide social, economic, environmental and political barriers to the effectiveness of water reallocation policy in Australia. These costs are often difficult to quantify, but potentially are subject to measurement. This project aims to develop a comprehensive transaction cost framework for the Murray-Darling Basin that can be used to capture and measure transaction costs related to water policy. Further, the scope of the cost measurement will involve a variety of data collection approaches. Outcomes include better water policy and management from arrangements that will span the divide between the Basin Plan and its implementation.Read moreRead less
Information Quality in Auctions of Multiple Objects. This project aims at using both theory and laboratory experiments to analyse the formation of prices and the buyers' behaviour at auctions of multiple objects. The study focusses on the comparison of simultaneous auction procedures (in which the objects are sold at once) to sequential auction procedures (in which the objects are sold one after the other) and attention is drawn on the effects of the quality of the buyers' information about the ....Information Quality in Auctions of Multiple Objects. This project aims at using both theory and laboratory experiments to analyse the formation of prices and the buyers' behaviour at auctions of multiple objects. The study focusses on the comparison of simultaneous auction procedures (in which the objects are sold at once) to sequential auction procedures (in which the objects are sold one after the other) and attention is drawn on the effects of the quality of the buyers' information about the assets to be sold on their bidding behaviour and on the seller's revenues. The conduct of laboratory experiments will provide a useful assessment of the theoretical predictions and valuable insights into the effects of buyers' information quality on their bidding behaviour at such markets.Read moreRead less

XML is the standard for representing, publishing and exchanging data over the Internet and relational database is the dominant technology for data management. Updating XML views over relational data is fundamental to bring these two technologies together to serve Internet-based applications. Australia has been a leading country in both developing and applying internet technologies. The theoretic outcomes of this project will contribute to the advance in database and web research communities and establish us as an internationally leading group in this research area. The technological outcomes will help organisations in Australia effectively and efficiently conduct e-Business on the Internet. Read moreRead less
Australian Seasonal Workers Programme and well-being impacts in Timor-Leste. This research aims to investigate the impacts of Australia’s Seasonal Workers Programme and South Korea’s Employment Permit System on the well-being of migrant workers and their families in Timor-Leste (East Timor). This research aims to investigate the impacts of Australia’s Seasonal Workers Programme and South Korea’s Employment Permit System on the well-being of migrant workers and their families in Timor-Leste (East Timor). The contribution of this research to scholarship would be the creation of a sound method to measure the impact of temporary labour migration on well-being across various aspects of life that can be used by researchers in Timor-Leste and elsewhere to evaluate the development impacts of such migration schemes. The data will inform evidence-based policies to improve temporary labour migration schemes, meet urgent development priorities in Timor-Leste, and maximise the benefits of Australian aid funded labour migration schemes.Read moreRead less

In this way, Australia and communities will be benefited both financially and informatively. The research of this project will also add to the research reputation of Australia in data integration areas. At the same time, the knowledge capacity of Australia on data integration will be enlarged which further improves frontier research activities in the area. Through the research of the project, PhD students will be trained.Read moreRead less
Effective and efficient corporate tax enforcement. This project uses economic theory and experimental tests in order to inform tax authorities on how to best audit tax receipts from corporations. The project will result in advice on how audit resources should be allocated across firms, if minimising corporate tax evasion and at the same time maximising social welfare are the authority's objective.
Price-Setting Rules and Allocative Efficiency in Oligopolies. This project aims to investigate under which circumstances restrictions on how often firms can change prices increase competition in an oligopoly and bring down prices. For this, we propose the use of laboratory experiments with a novel design followed by field experiments and a real price-data analysis for external validation. This study will result in both the advancement of theory describing how firms compete in dynamic oligopolies ....Price-Setting Rules and Allocative Efficiency in Oligopolies. This project aims to investigate under which circumstances restrictions on how often firms can change prices increase competition in an oligopoly and bring down prices. For this, we propose the use of laboratory experiments with a novel design followed by field experiments and a real price-data analysis for external validation. This study will result in both the advancement of theory describing how firms compete in dynamic oligopolies and practical policy advice on how price setting rules can be used to improve consumer welfare. This project has the potential to generate sizable benefits to Australian consumers, as the resulting policy advice would be applicable to large markets such as those for petrol, groceries and online retail.Read moreRead less

Recent development in machine learning (ML) has seen ML models with extremely high prediction accuracy. However, to support human-machine partnership in decision-making in complex environments, beyond accuracy, it is essential for ML systems to be competency aware and reliable, and at the same time be exploratory. This project aims to develop novel techniques to equip a ML system with the ability to identify own competency, to justify its competency and decisions, to explore unknown situations and fully utilise existing expertise to deal with unknowns. The expected outcomes of the project will enable ML systems to become truely intelligent and reliable machine partners for human decision makers in a wide range of applications.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to provide new technologies to facilitate the exponential growth in demand for streaming of digital data. Based on novel techniques combining graph theory, information theory, and coding, this project aims to change the way we encode data, offering significant improvements to the efficiency of communication networks and providing a 10-100 fold increase in transmission speed. If successful this project expects to bring digital transmission improvements which could impact on almost every sector of the economy from education to advanced healthcare. Possible applications include cloud storage for big data, high-definition video streaming, and wide-coverage high-speed mobile broadband.Read moreRead less
Foundations for future wireless networks. Most of us have first-hand experience with temperamental wireless communications devices that don't meet our expectations. This project will deliver new technologies that enable lower costs, through more efficient use of radio spectrum. It will deliver more reliable and higher speed wireless broadband with better coverage, even to highly mobile users.
