Resistant starch (RS) can promote absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the large intestine. As zinc deficiency in children from the developing world remains a major public health issue, we will use a rodent model to determine if RS can improve zinc absorption in growing rats with preceeding zinc deficiency. Summary
Recent National findings reveal that on average, 45% of Australian children aged 5-14 years watch TV for at least 2 hours/day. Given the risk for adverse cognitive, behavioral and physical health outcomes related to excessive TV viewing, including childhood obesity, there is an urgent need to design effective interventions to reduce unhealthy TV habits in the early years. My project responds to this need.

Over 50% of adult mental illness begins during childhood. Our health system is under increasing strain to support such children, especially public services. Teachers are in an ideal position to detect emerging issues and organise intervention, but they need help. This project aims to explore the potential for a collaboration between health and education to identify children with emotional and behavioural difficulties sooner and more accurately, and put in place effective strategies of support.
The Role Of Chemokine Signalling In Maintenance Of The Latent HIV Reservoir

Summary
HIV cure research aims to eliminate cells with HIV in their DNA. These cells have higher levels of a receptor, CCR6, signalling through which causes migration to and concentration in the gut. This gut migration may help to maintain the HIV reservoir by bringing susceptible cells close to infected cells. We will assess the effect of blocking CCR6 signalling on the ability to infect these cells with HIV in the laboratory and its effect on the reservoir of an analogous virus in macaques.
The aim of this project is to determine whether melatonin supplementation has an effect on cumulative pregnancy and delivery rates, allowing for the use of frozen embryos obtained during a melatonin treatment cycle. This will be achieved by a series of experiments designed to investigate the effect of melatonin on follicular fluid and culture media as well as assessing clinical pregnancy rates and delivery rates.

The "Use it or lose it" principal is highly applicable in cognition functions, particularly with ageing. This project aims to use an intervention that promotes active brain processes and function to protect and preserve it from deterioration. The effect of this dementia-prevention strategy and results will help fill gaps in the current body of knowledge, and will allow the prescription of individualised treatment by showing the mechanisms by which this intervention works to improve cognition.

Memory decline in Alzheimer's disease is linked to a massive loss of neurons and the connections between these cells. Stem cell therapy has the potential to combat this neuronal loss by replenishing the brain with healthy functional neurons. This study aims to develop a new type of neural stem-like cell, termed skin-derived neural precursors, which can be isolated from a patient’s own skin. The outcomes from this work will provide the necessary data for progress into human clinical trial.
