    Rob Ramsay has had a long standing research commitment to understanding bowel and breast cancer using mouse models with defined genetic defects. These sophisticated models replicate various stages of cancer development and some have profound effects on normal tissue biology. He also uses molecular tools to investigate how genes are controlled. These approaches are providing direct input into the development of therapeutic agents for cancer treatment.

    Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related death in Australia. Strategies to improve outcomes for these patients are urgently needed. This NHMRC SRF Fellowship will seek to identify new molecules in cancer cells which can be targeted to treat this disease, and to discover genes which can be used to improve patient response to treatment.

    This proposal aims to use new cutting-edge techniques to characterize, at a global level, changes in growth regulatory signals in cancer cells. This will identify proteins critical for cancer growth that represent potential targets for therapy. The ultimate outcome of this work will be improved treatment strategies for cancer patients, and hence reduced morbidity and mortality.

    Australians are ‘sitters’ -- at home, at work and in the car. Most do not do exercise, nor participate in sports. This leads to weight gain and risk of disease: notably type 2 diabetes, heart disease, breast and colon cancer. Professor Owen will identify why prolonged sitting can be so unhealthy; how our neighbourhoods, homes, work and cars make us sit too much; why some people are more susceptible to ‘couch potato’ lifestyles; and, the associated social and environmental impacts

    Summary
    Cancer is linked to mutations in a large variety of genes but how these changes impact on cell behaviour is often unknown. We are using functional genomics in zebrafish to identify genes that are essential for rapid rates of proliferation by intestinal epithelial cells. Seven genes have been cloned so far and our next task is to analyse, using mouse models and human cancer transcriptome analysis, whether any are indispensable for cancer growth and thereby present suitable targets for therapy.

To accomplish this, the cell surface is made up of numerous regions each with a specialised role.     Malaria is a devastating disease of global significance. With mounting resistance to current drugs and no licensed malaria vaccine, there is a pressing need to search for new strategies to reduce the global burden of malaria. My research program aims to understand how the parasites that cause malaria extensively renovate the cells in which they reside and subvert their host so that they can thrive and survive, with a view to identifying new pathways that can be targeted by drugs or vaccines.

    Our bodies use a process called Programmed Cell Death to remove unwanted or dangerous cells. This work aims to understand the machinery that regulates this process at the molecular level.
