Summary
This CRE brings together leading population health researchers to investigate the health effects of mobile phones and magnetic resonance imaging. It will address high priority research questions identified by the WHO. It will generate new knowledge that leads to improved health outcomes through a 5 year research program. The outcomes will be translated into health policy and practice through international and national organisations. The CRE will train PhDs and postdoctoral research fellows.

The total contribution of vascular pathology to dementia is estimated to be as high as 50-70%. The Vascular Contributions to Dementia CRE brings together leading researchers in cerebrovascular disease and dementia to address the most important issues relating to the epidemiology of Vascular Dementia, its robust biomarkers and its treatment and prevention, so as to reduce its overall health burden, and meet the promise of vascular dementia as a truly 'preventable dementia''.

Summary
The diagnosis of dementia is often difficult, especially in its early stages. The current delays and uncertainties in diagnosing dementia cause anxiety in patients and limit treatment options. A number of new technologies have demonstrated their value in clinical dementia research, but have not been adopted into clinical practice. The Centre of Research Excellence in Enhanced Dementia Diagnosis will provide a pathway to implement new technologies to transform dementia diagnosis in Australia.

Summary
Cognitive health is essential for productivity at all ages. Common chronic diseases such as diabetes, and risk factors such as smoking, can reduce cognitive function and increase risk of cognitive decline. Our Centre aims to build evidence about the things that impact on cognitive health and lead to cognitive decline; to develop methods of reducing cognitive decline; and to measure the impact of cognitive impairment at the national level to inform the government on costs and planning.

It will determine the potential for RF-induced harm in the community and how best to communicate this knowledge to the community, translate this knowledge to the community via focused strategies, and develop Australia’s RF-health research and communication capability for the future.

With over 5 billion mobile phone subscriptions world-wide, the electromagnetic energy (EME) that powers this technology is now ubiquitous, as is community concern about the possibility of associated health effects. Responding to this concern, the Australian Centre for Electromagnetic Bioeffects Research will embark on a 5-year research program to promote Australia’s EME health both in the immediate future, and through the development of human research capacity in this field, into the future.
