Summary
Changes in China's concepts of criminal justice, 1980–2015. This project aims to explore the relationship between justice and injustice in the People's Republic of China (PRC), and the impact of changing conceptions of justice over the last thirty years. Research will focus on key legal cases in the PRC since the 1980s. Examination of official documents, unexplored court material and other fresh evidence will explore new perspectives on Chinese law and comparative criminal justice. The legal implications of revenge pornography. This project aims to investigate prevalence, nature and effects of revenge pornography in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Revenge pornography is a serious criminal justice problem, but only one Australian jurisdiction has introduced legislation to address the issue. Applicable laws here and elsewhere are inconsistent and inadequate. Participation in the administration of justice: deaf citizens as jurors. This project will pioneer international research on legal signed language interpreting and jury service; the results are likely to innovate law reform. The expected outcome will be to overturn previously held common law that deaf people cannot serve as jurors due to having an interpreter as the 13th person in the jury room as well as confidentiality issues.
The ‘Peace’ of Lausanne (1923): Genesis, Legacies, Paradoxes. This study aims to revisit the foundation of the modern Middle East by investigating the still valid 1923 Peace Treaty of Lausanne. Through a combined analysis of the Treaty's prehistory, protracted negotiations and paradigmatic impact, it will reassess the Conference's and Treaty's role in Modern History. This project addresses this mismatch by discovering new ways to improve the policing of gender violence by testing unique models of women led policing. Convicts, empire and order, 1783-1857. This project shows how convicts changed and challenged ideas about law and authority in British Empire between 1783 and 1857. It uses detailed study of everyday conflict over convict legal status and rights in Bermuda and New South Wales to demonstrate the importance of convict transportation to the constitution of empire in the colonies.
Formal approaches to legal reasoning. This project aims to use formal epistemology to improve understanding of existing legal practices and to propose recommendations for improving the consistency and accuracy of legal proceedings. Since judges and juries rarely know all the relevant facts, they must make the best decision possible in the face of uncertainty. Formal epistemology employs probabilistic reasoning to advance understanding of how to form beliefs and make decisions in response to unce ....Formal approaches to legal reasoning. Authority and integrity of primary legal materials need to be reconsidered and re-invented in light of technological changes.
