Emerging technologies such as DSBF is capable of assisting clinicians with selecting dosing regimens that achieve the target antimicrobial concentrations needed for treating infections. We will conduct a clinical trial to investigate the ability of DSBF to improve antimicrobial concentrations of patients in the ICU. The results of this study may lead to clinicians being given a new powerful validated tool for improving the treatment outcomes of patients suffering from infections in the ICU.

With increasing age, there is increase in disease, for which medications may provide benefit, and an increase in the risk of adverse drug reactions, even after considering the increase in medication use by older people. We will investigate how the liver clears drugs from the blood in old age. This will guide dosing of medications for older people. We will also study how drugs injure the liver in old age and test interventions to prevent this toxicity.

Optimising medication use in people with dementia will include both initiation of necessary medications and withdrawal of unnecessary and harmful medications. Many guidelines exist to aid doctors when prescribing medication, however, no guidelines currently exist that detail when, or how to withdraw medications. Development and implementation of such guidelines into practice may lead to improved quality of life of people with dementia and their carers.

Gout, caused by excessive urate, can be controlled by prescribing medication and patients adhering to them. We will conduct a 2-year controlled trial in primary care to test an eHealth tool to significantly improve gout patient outcomes. This tool tracks patients plasma urate, medication adherence, gout attacks and provides education, interaction with gout experts and reminders of medical visits. Nationwide rollout of this gout management tool will occur after improved outcomes are proven.

In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for young people and the 5th highest for people in their middle age. Harmful use of alcohol can be attributed to around a third of suicides, and there is evidence that alcohol related suicides represent a clinically distinct type of suicide. This research aims to identify medications that have the potential prevent alcohol related suicides by targeting behaviours associated with alcohol use.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an inflammatory disease the lungs which will be the 3rd most common cause of death in 2020. Treatment is expensive and inaccessible for many patients in developing countries. This study will look at the clinical effectiveness of two cheap drugs which, when used in combination, have been shown to act together to reduce the inflammation in this disorder. A positive outcome would revolutionise treatment in the developing world.
