Chronic disease remains the principal cause of health inequality for Indigenous Australians. Primary care is critical to mounting a health system response. The Aboriginal community controlled sector is at the coal face of chronic disease management, yet requires the synthesis, utilisation, development, evaluation and translation of evidence to practice. Neuromuscular disorders affect 1 in 1,000 people, often result in progressive muscle weakness and can cause early death. At present not enough is being done to ensure translation of research into improved outcomes for patients. For the first time in Australia, the CRE-NMD will establish an integrated, comprehensive program to investigate diagnosis, prevention and treatment of neuromuscular disorders from infancy to adulthood.

Childhood and adolescence is a critical period during which chronic disease in Indigenous Australians can be prevented. Using long-term data and established partnerships developed over 10-15 years from two large studies of young Aboriginal people, this team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers with expertise in child health, epidemiology, health services research, and implementation science will identify and test pathways to improved care and health outcomes for young Aboriginal people.

The pattern of disease, dying and death has changed dramatically in Australia over the last century. ELCCRE brings together four leading research centres in end of life care and establishes strategic links with leading investigators in chronic disease, health economics and legal and ethical issues. ELCCRE will address the urgent need for evidence based end of life service delivery strategies that are responsive to the complex, unpredictable and often extended patterns of disease progression.
