Summary
Little is known about the consequences of prescription opioid use during pregnancy for fetal and childhood development. In this study covering over 5 million mother-child pairs, we will investigate the safety of opioid use in pregnancy, by combining rich data sources from Australia, and the 5 Nordic countries. We will translate findings into policy, guidelines and messaging for medicine consumers and prescribers to protect the safety of women and children.

There are no community-based follow-up (FU) studies of three generations able to examine the impact of earlier generational factors on the developmental pathways of obesity in third generation. The Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) cohort now has data covering the grandmothers' (GI) reproductive life course and a FU of their children (GII) into adulthood. Preconception Determinants Of Child Health And Development: A 4-year Follow Up Of Offspring Born To The Australian Temperament Project

Summary
This project will follow offspring born to a large population cohort study that has tracked the mental health and wellbeing of around 2000 participants across 30 years prior to parenthood. The aim is to understand how the lives parents lived before conception, as well as events during pregnancy, shape social and emotional outcomes for their children. Results will inform radically new approaches to promoting child health and development across generations.

Summary
Using data from a large cohort of Australian children followed for over 30 years, this study will investigate how weight status and physical fitness from childhood to adulthood determine early markers of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes (cardiometabolic disease) in midlife. It will provide much needed evidence to address the high prevalence of cardiometabolic disease risk factors in young Australians through better targeted disease prevention and early clinical intervention strategies.

Summary
It is important to understand whether physical activity can prevent asthma, or whether asthma prevents children from being physically active, as this will influence the decisions we make with regard to the management of both childhood asthma and childhood activity. This work uses data from two studies of Australian children to tease out which path is the most important path to target when trying to increase physical activity levels and improve the respiratory health of children and adolescents.

Australian children from disadvantaged families are 2-3 times more likely to be behind their peers at school entry. This project investigates the long-term effects of smalltalk, a parenting program to help parents support their children’s early development by enriching the home learning environment. We will examine the effects of smalltalk on the home environment, children’s school readiness and socio-emotional development, and assess its long-term health, education and economic benefits.

The preschool years may offer opportunities to divert children from the path to obesity, before poor physical activity and nutritional habits become firmly established. The preschool years may offer opportunities to divert children from the path to obesity, before poor physical activity and nutritional habits become firmly established. Adiposity rebound is the time in a child's life (usually around 5 to 6 years of age) when body mass index (BMI) begins to increase after a steady decline in BMI in the preschool years. Early adiposity rebound is associated with increased BMI in later life. We don't yet know whether the early adiposity rebound causes the higher BMI, or whether it is simply an early sign of an already-established pathway of behavioural and environmental risk. We need a much better understanding of predictors of early adiposity rebound and the changes that occur to determine if age at adiposity rebound is a modifiable risk factor for adult obesity. This study will document the process and timing of adiposity rebound and the changes in percent body fat and lean body mass that occur during that time. We will also determine whether risk and protective factors for early adiposity rebound and overweight at age 6 years are the same or different. We will study over 400 children on whom extensive data have been collected since birth, including period of gestation, birth weight and length. At various stages during their first two years of life, height, weight, feeding patterns and development were recorded. We will measure BMI and perform bioimpedance analysis (BIA) on these children six times between 4 and 6 years of age. BIA provides a measure of body fat and lean mass that is well accepted by children. This will help determine the relationship between changing BMI at different ages and the fat-to-lean mass ratios associated with those changes.
