Complexation of a drug with lipid and/or sugar units represents one of the most important of the strategies being investigated in this burgeoning field. Increasing the lipid solubility of a hydrophilic compound has been established as an important factor in improving its absorption as it is necessary for passive transport across intestinal mucosal membranes. The role of sugar unit is very important: (i) it modifies the physico-chemical properties (solubility), (ii) utilizes active transport systems (e.g. Glucose transport) and (iii) target the compound - "MAGIC BULET" (Lewis X analogues - damaged cells). There is no limit to the areas of medicine and public health that would benefit from revolutionary new technology in these areas.Read moreRead less
A combinatorial approach to creation of new epitopes with biological activity. We aim to develop and extend the Mosaic technology patented by Proxima Concepts Ltd. as a new methodolgy for dynamic combinatorial chemistry and drug delivery. The technology relies on bringing chemical structures of interest in close proximity by presenting them on the surface of a micelle type structure. These structures will also be developed at a targeted drug delivery vehicle. The technology will impact on the ....A combinatorial approach to creation of new epitopes with biological activity. BIOCATALYSTS MINED FROM CYTOCHROME P450 LIBRARIES: AN INNOVATIVE TOOL FOR ACCELERATING DRUG DEVELOPMENT. The cytochrome P450s (P450s) are a family of enzymes that are perhaps the most versatile biological catalysts known. DNA shuffling is an emerging technique that takes the genes encoding families of enzymes and creates libraries of catalysts with both improved and novel properties. The cytochrome P450s (P450s) are a family of enzymes that are perhaps the most versatile biological catalysts known. DNA shuffling is an emerging technique that takes the genes encoding families of enzymes and creates libraries of catalysts with both improved and novel properties. We will obtain proof of concept that shuffled P450 libraries can be screened and optimized for use as biocatalysts in drug development. The methodologies developed here will overcome two critical bottlenecks in current drug development: the optimisation and metabolic profiling of new drug candidates. This will yield important benefits in accelerating the optimisation and safety testing of drugs under development.Read moreRead less

Insulin dependant diabetes is a rapidly growing disease. The current method for insulin delivery to the patient is by injection, which is inconvenient. Oral delivery of insulin is a more acceptable method. It is proposed to develop a dense gas technique to coat insulin with a pH sensitive polymer to protect it from the acidic environment of the stomach. Insulin can then be released at the high pH of the intestine when the polymer is dissolved. Particle size control is feasible by dense gas processes by manipulating operating parameters. Advantages include low residual solvent and manufacture at ambient temperatures.Read moreRead less
