Implementing Neuroprotective Strategies For Fetal Growth Restriction

Summary
Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a serious and common complication of pregnancy that is a principal cause of injury to the developing fetal brain. In turn, damage to the developing brain during pregnancy may cause cerebral palsy and other cognitive and behavioural deficits. This proposal builds on my work to date characterising the mechanisms that contribute to neuropathology in FGR infants, by implementing targeted strategies to protect or repair the FGR brain.

Summary
Around 10% of neonates in Australia are diagnosed with seizures each year. Seizures worsen neurodevelopmental outcome following hypoxic brain injury. Despite evidence of the limited effectiveness and potential neurotoxicity of current anti-seizure medication, treatment has not changed for many decades. The objective of this study is to optimise treatment of neonatal seizures with a compound that is effective and does not cause harm, or indeed provides neuroprotection for the compromised brain.

Summary
Surviving the transition to newborn life at birth is critically dependent upon a major re-organization of the infant’s circulation which is triggered by umbilical cord occlusion and the onset of air-breathing. This application is focused on investigating procedures that assist in stabilising the circulation during the newborn period and protect it from large swings in cardiac output and blood flow that have the potential to cause vascular-related injury in newborn infants.
