Preventing terrorism through community-based approaches. This project aims to investigate the prevention of terrorism. It will examine approaches that involve police community engagement and local responses to violent extremism. This is a significant issue given communities are a key line of defence against terrorism. Preventing child sexual abuse by understanding perpetrators’ motivations. This project aims to investigate, for the first time, the experiential motivations of child sexual abuse perpetrators. Using a novel theoretical and methodological approach, it expects to discover new knowledge about the motivations of child sexual abuse perpetrators. It is vital to remain at the forefront in combating the human and livestock diseases that parasites cause. Vaccine assessment and the large scale analysis of patient tissues are vital to the biotechnology, agriculture and pharmaceutical industries with outcomes leading to innovative strategies for control. Caged lanthanides for use in photo-dynamic therapy and near infra-red imaging. The early detection and effective treatment of cancer are two critical factors which determine survivability. This project will provide improved drugs for photo-dynamic therapy and develop emissive probes for near infra-red imaging to allow better discrimination between healthy and diseased tissue and improve subsequent treatment.
Foreign DNA is a danger signal for mammalian cells. This project investigates how cells normally respond to foreign DNA, and is relevant to understanding how the body fights infections, particularly by viruses. The results will help us to design more effective treatments for infectious disease. Studying responses to DNA will also promote the design of new treatments for the autoimmune disease lupus, and help improve technologies or treatments where DNA is introduced into cells or tissues. New data-driven mathematical models of collective cell motion. Cancer and chronic wounds are a national, and indeed, international health problem set to worsen as our population ages. Predictive and interpretive tools are required to improve our understanding of collective cell migration in relation to cancer and chronic wounds. This project will produce new validated mathematical tools for predicting collective cell migration in a general framework that can deal with application-specific detail ....New data-driven mathematical models of collective cell motion. Identification of genetic variants underlying disease risk is currently one of the primary means for increasing our understanding of the biochemical and developmental pathways involved. Genetic studies rely on sophisticated statistical and computational (bioinformatics) techniques. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) are aggressive diseases which lack effective therapies in clinical use. A novel and curative therapy was developed against PDAC and TNBC which involves targeted radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy and DNA damage response inhibition.
