Summary
The impetus for development of the palliative care movement was the plight of cancer patients, which is why my study aims to explore and interpret what cancer means to Aboriginal women and how experiences and perception of the disease impacts on their attitudes toward treatment options. People with cancer and their caregivers may have a range of unmet physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Unfortunately, not everybody receives the type of help they need with these issues, or at the time they most need it. In this study, we will assess the extent to which recently developed Palliative Care Needs Assessment Guidelines and a Needs Assessment Tool help to a) identify those advanced cancer patients and caregivers who have unmet needs and b) ensure they are offered the care ....People with cancer and their caregivers may have a range of unmet physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Previous Doctoral work by the applicant illustrated how the compelling force to make sense of life experiences and find significance in existence (two central aspects of meaning) increases the complexity of coping with advanced cancer. While meaning can assist coping by offering a framework, perspective and counterbalance to the challenge of illness, the absence of meaning can also be a precursor to profound despair. Although music is widely used, scant discussion about its therapeutic merit exists when compared to the spoken word. Throughout the Ages, ritualized music promoted health and loss adjustment, however, music is not pivotal in modern medicine. The research will examine people’s intuitive music usage when experiencing life threatening cancer and the relationship between music therapy participation and one’s later music experience.
