Staying on at school: strategies for increasing high school completion rates in low-retention regions of NSW. Leaving school early has been shown to have detrimental effects on the life chances, well being and health of young people and their communities. Despite this, a significant portion of today's youth chooses to leave school early. Unfortunately, little is understood about the processes and factors involved in the decision to leave school, and hence schools and systems are uncertain about how to decrease dropping out. Understanding the processes and factors involved in the decision to leave school early, and identifying the basis for between-school differences, will assist in the development of programs and curricula that will be more successful in increasing retention rates, hence enhancing the skill base of Australia's youth.

This research will produce new knowledge, strategies, models and recommendations that will help to keep early career teachers in the profession in regional, rural and remote areas. In doing so it will address the problem of teacher shortage that is currently threatening the nation's educational, economic and social outcomes. The research outcomes will have particular credibility at the national level because they will be the result of dialogue and collaboration across three universities and six industry partners who are the key stakeholders in teacher employment in two states. In addition, the collaborative approach will facilitate implementation of recommendations at the local, state and national levels.

Disciplinarity, knowledge and schooling: Analysing and improving integrated, cumulative learning in classrooms. For Australia to enhance its educational and professional standing, it needs growing levels of intellectual expertise and flexibility among school graduates, who now operate in workplaces that are rapidly evolving intellectually and technologically. This project will contribute to research, debate, and practice, by focusing on sustained integrated knowledge-building, but it also aims to offer practitioners and authorities an enhanced, locally-grown evidence for educational decisions, practice, and policy. While the motivations for the project are theoretical, professional, and methodological, they arise from a recognition of the economic and cultural importance of intellectually strong citizens in an increasingly demanding global setting.

Lexical expertise and reading skill: An experimental analysis of individual differences in written language proficiency. The Federal Government's current National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy highlights the importance of an evidence-based approach to teaching and assessing literacy. Considerable research and policy effort has been directed towards early reading programs. Much less attention has been paid to evaluating children's later development of reading comprehension and spelling proficiency, but there is wide diversity in these skills within the adult population that influence educational and vocational opportunity. This investigation of the factors underlying expertise in reading and spelling will provide evidence that can contribute to developing educational policy and curricula for the later stages of schooling.

Productive Partnerships for Teaching Quality: Quality Improvement, School-Community Practice and Teacher Education in and for Rural and Remote Settings. This project aims to develop a partnership between two teacher-education institutions and eleven school districts in NSW, in researching quality improvements in teaching for rural and remote areas. These areas and their communities, including schools, are clearly under pressure, given global economic developments. Using various forms of data analysis, case-studies, interviews, Web-networks and school-based action research, the project will identify successful strategies for building rural teacher and community capacity, improving educational outcomes for all children, and appropriately preparing and retaining teachers for rural schools. The project will make recommendations for general educational policy and practice and for teacher education.

Teachers For a Fair Go: A study of teachers who 'make a difference' to students in poverty. Restricted educational outcomes are central to entrenched disadvantage in poor communities in both rural and urban Australia. This project directly addresses education's role in equal opportunities for all Australians. It seeks to work with, and inform, Australia's largest educational jurisdiction (the NSWDET) about practices which gain success for its poorest students. The project also applies new ideas around motivation and engagement from within the MeE Framework, developed at the University of Western Sydney. Using teachers as co-researchers also takes forward methodological practices in investigating what makes a difference in the social and academic outcomes of students in poverty.

The project provides the first comprehensive historical account of Australia's international relations in education, presented in light of evolving policy and strategic concerns. International education has become increasingly important for Australian foreign policy and national development post-WW2, and has been taking on particular weight in educational policy and practice. The project investigates how pursuing the national interest through international engagement has helped shape the educational dimensions of economic and social policy in Australia. Developing an innovative conceptual framework - based on a contrast between the logic of internationalism and of globalisation - is of particular significance.
