2-Methoxyestradiol Analogues: Prototype Modulators Of Annexin II-dependent Plasminogen Activation

Summary
The enzyme system that enables us to dissolve blood clots is similar to the system that enables cancer cells to escape from the primary tumour and travel in the blood to another organ to form a secondary cancer growth. We have new results showing that some drug candidates can distinguish between these two closely related enzyme systems. We are now working to develop inhibitors that will stop cancer cells from spreading without compromising the ability to dissolve blood clots.
Inhibitors Of Secretory Phospholipases In Diet Induced Obese Rats
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$581,051.00
Summary
A new drug given to rats fed a high fat-carbohydrate diet shows very promising effects in preventing and treating abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and other risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This project will profile biochemical and pharmacological properties of the drug in more detail in order to track down molecular mechanisms of its action and potential therapeutic benefits, guided by studies on rats, biochemical markers, rat and human fat cells.
This proposal aims to examine central mechanisms important in stress related hypertension. My team will focus on the role of tissue plasminogen activator in mediating inhibitory effects of chronic stress on neural plasticity and examine inhibitory dysfunction in GABAergic and nitric oxide pathways that lead to increased sympathetic activity and elevated blood pressure. Importantly, we will investigate the potential of three interventions directed at each as therapies for hypertension.
A Type II Diabetes Adn Obesity Prevention Program For Primary School Aged Rural Indigenous Children
