This project aims to implement an Aboriginal-led Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) program in multiple locations across the Kimberley to enhance the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal youth. EAL is a learning approach where participants learn important life skills by 'doing' activities with horses. These activities enhance problem-solving skills, communication, self‐awareness, and emotional regulation by engaging multiple brain systems, which can help cope with disruptive life stressors.
Pathophysiology And Alternative Preventative Strategy For Breast Cancer Chemotherapy-induced Bone Loss

Summary
Combination cytotoxic chemotherapy is the current optimal approach for treating breast cancer in premenopausal women. However, long-term skeletal defects (osteoporosis and fractures) caused by the chemotherapy have become an increasingly serious problem due to its intensified use and improved patient survival rate. This project seeks to elucidate the mechanisms for chemotherapy-induced bone defects and to initiate development of a preventative treatment using natural bioactive micronutrients.
Age-related macular degeneration, involves the progressive loss of light sensitive cells from the retina, and is a major cause of loss of vision, and quality of life, in people over 60. Activation of immune mechanisms have been implicated in the disease, but it is not understood, why the immune system attacks vision cells. This study looks at the mechanisms of the activation of immune cells and will test treatment strategies to minimize immune activation, and thereby prevent blindness.

This project will evaluate a novel approach to cannabis detoxification. It is hypothesized that undertaking an exercise intervention will reduce cannabis withdrawal symptoms by stimulating the release of cannabis-like compounds produced by the body and/or through promoting the release of THC (the main psychoactive component of cannabis) from fat stores. The potential public health, research and clinical implications are considerable, particularly given the high accessibility of the intervention.
Combined Dry-needling, Advice And Graded Exercise: A Randomized Controlled Trial In Chronic Whiplash

Summary
Central hyperexcitability is a feature of chronic whiplash and may be one reason for the poor response of this condition to standard treatment approaches such as exercise. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatment of dry-needling has shown potential to decrease this hypersensitivity in other musculoskeletal conditions. This study will investigate the effects of dry-needling combined with an orthodox treatment of advice and graded exercise on pain and disability in chronic whiplash.
Cancer arises through a combination of common DNA mutations which are associated with very poor survival in certain cancers. However, the cause of these mutations was always believed to be external factors (eg. UV light, toxins), Our exciting preliminary results show internal molecules, called circular RNAs, can drive these mutations and this project will investigate how this occurs and study whether targeting these molecules can reduce the incidence of cancers.

Summary
Mutation of genes are hallmarks of both cancer and neurological disorders. My research group has identified roles for circular RNAs in both these processes. Now, we must close the loop by investigating the mechanism of these processes. This will inform not only why these genes are commonly mutated, but by exploiting the highly stable circular RNAs they may provide early prognostic/diagnostic biomarkers and even represent novel therapeutic targets for cancer and Huntington’s disease.

Breast cancer (BrCa) is a leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. BrCas unable to respond to current therapies have the worst outcomes. We propose a novel strategy to treat these cancers, based on our new findings.
