Sentimental blokes: a cultural history of working-class masculinities in Australia, 1850-1929. This is necessary in part because stereotypes of Australian masculinity emphasise hostility towards emotion, especially sentimental emotion. By demonstrating the significance of masculine sentimentality in Australia's past, this project will help to change this. Drawing on the insights of theatre and cultural studies and publishing in diverse forums, it will also bring a more interdisciplinary dimension to the history of Australian masculinities. Further, it will make Australian material relevant to international scholarship on emotional history, the relationship between class and gender, and gendered subjectivities.Read moreRead less

Romance and Intimacy among China's Young Rural Migrant Workers. China's global ascendancy seems unstoppable. But its economic reforms have made China one of the world's most unequal countries. To a significant extent, the nation's stability and global prosperity now rest precariously on the goodwill of more than 260 million mostly disadvantaged rural migrant workers, and how they feel and act. But how do they experience inequality? How does inequality shape their most intimate feelings? This project aims to demonstrate unequivocally that love and romance are far from 'trivial' for these individuals: studying them is not a retreat to the merely personal, but rather promises vital new ways of understanding inequality.Read moreRead less
Changing spaces of HIV prevention: a cultural analysis of transformations in sexual sociability. This project will address this gap by examining transformations in gay culture over the past 30 years and investigating the connections to HIV prevention.

Fashion, once regarded as a purely Western phenomenon and equated with thoroughly modern life, has recently made an improbable appearance in histories both of urban life in late imperial China and of twentieth-century Chinese nationalism. To speak of Chinese fashion is effectively to raise a question about the origins and course of China's modernity. The project aims to respond to this question through a study of the culture of clothing from Ming to Mao, the expected outcome being an illustrated monograph of interest to scholars and general readers in the fields of fashion theory, material culture, and Chinese history.Read moreRead less
