With the continued push towards community living for people with intellectual disability, how best to provide support at the end-of-life remains a neglected research area. This occurs against a backdrop of an increasingly ageing population, in an arena where end-of-life care and dying at home is the preferred option for most people. This research breaks new ground, aiming to establish supports such that people with intellectual disability may remain at home until the end of their life.

Summary
This study investigates the process of cell death in the spinal cord following chronic compression using a rat model. Chronic spinal cord compression can occur in common conditions such as 'slipped disc' or disc prolapse, the increased formation of bone around the spinal cord that is more common with age, or from tumours forming around the spinal cord in cancer patients. The distribution, timing and the mechanism by which cells die in the cord after compression will be analysed.

Summary
Survival rates for many cancers are improving, however, for most patients diagnosed with a high grade glioma (HGG) there is limited long term survival. The treatments administered have limited effectiveness due to extensive infiltration of the tumour cells. New therapeutic strategies targeting the invading cell population to further reduce tumour spread are needed. Hence, a better understanding of the mechanisms promoting glioma migration and invasion are urgently required in this fatal disease.

An estimated 5,000 lives are lost each year in NSW through early deaths due to differences in socioeconomic status. While many of the causes are related to social, environmental and economic factors the health system has an important direct role through advocacy, improving access to services and reducing risks for illness. This study looks at the effectiveness of using equity focused health impact assessment to ensure health policies maximise the distribution of benefits to all groups.
