This project aims to investigate the histories of Aboriginal Queensland women who trained as nurses or midwives from the 1890s - 1950s, countering existing assumptions that First Nations women could not access education and employment and were 'just domestics'. Once viewed as primarily a product of recent conditions such as lifestyle choices, it is now evident that health outcomes can also be shaped by intergenerational mechanisms. Analysis of these in current populations is impractical given the considerable time it would take for a prospective study to unfold.
