Summary
This research has four main aims. First, we aim to obtain detailed knowledge of how normal children develop a range of different abilities, including motor coordination, language skills, the ability to understand other people, self-control, and general cognitive ability. Second, with this knowledge of normal development we will be able to identify cases in which normal development does not occur and to identify the exact ability area(s) in which development is abnormal. Patterns of abnormal deve ....This research has four main aims. Second, with this knowledge of normal development we will be able to identify cases in which normal development does not occur and to identify the exact ability area(s) in which development is abnormal. Patterns of abnormal development will be studied in children with one of seven disorders, including Autistic Disorder, Intellectual Disability, and Developmental Coordination Disorder. Third, we will assess whether deficits in some ability correspond to impairments in just one basic psychological structure (e.g., language deficits are related to impairment in the ability to recognise sounds) or whether they can be due to impairments in several structures (e.g., the ability to recognise faces or the ability to maintain attention). Finally, we will investigate whether and how impairments in one or more basic psychological structures can result in deficits in one or more of the ability areas that are the basis for the diagnosis of one or more developmental disorders. The MetaFIND (Metagenomics For INfectious Diseases) project is a combined laboratory and clinical study that aims to develop and investigate the use of cutting-edge genome sequencing technology to improve the healthcare of patients with severe infections. It involves developing and optimising a method to determine the cause of an infection by analysing all the DNA present in a clinical sample – a promising “one-stop-shop” test to help improve diagnosis and subsequent treatment of infections.

Summary
Hereditary ataxia is a severe neurological disorder that results in impaired coordination and balance and affects 1 in 20,000 Australians. Ataxias are often caused by complex genetic mutations called repeat expansions (RE), which are difficult to detect. Therefore, genetic diagnosis of ataxia remains limited and poorly accessible, leading to a gap in clinical care. In this study, we will utilise modern advances in genetic sequencing technology to diagnose and discover ataxias caused by REs.

Summary
It is difficult to accurately diagnose an individual with dementia especially at early stages of the disease. This project aims to see what markers in the brain differentiate those with and without subtypes of dementia and to see what clinical criteria best relate to these markers. It is hoped that results will improve clinical criteria for dementia and its subtypes, thus improving the diagnostic accuracy of dementia.

Summary
Allergy to fish among children is often life-long and emerging as a significant healthcare issue worldwide, while management of fish allergy is challenging due to the lack of reliable diagnostic assays. This research grant will lead to the development of novel diagnostics for fish allergy in Australia, addressing aspects of the worldwide food allergy epidemic and forms the ideal platform for the study of fish specific allergens, generating novel knowledge for greatly improved patient management.
In Australia, over 2,000 families every year have a stillborn child. Each of these deaths places a heavy psychological and financial burden on parents and families and the wider community. Progress in preventing these deaths has been very slow and despite the impact of this loss, the care provided for parents following a stillbirth is often inadequate. I am leading a national research program to reduce stillbirth and improve care for parents when their child is stillborn.
