Increasing land values in all major Australian cities are placing pressure on local creative initiatives. Displacement of small cultural producers and the consequent dispersal of local networks is damaging to the urban social and economic fabric. This research will assess the challenges to strong and thriving creative subcultures in gentrifying cities. By identifying cases of best practice in Australia, and with reference to similar practices overseas, the project will expand the range of regulatory and negotiating tools available to state and local governments to maintain their valuable creativity and local cultural diversity.

The project aims to define skilled migration trends in relation to the key fields (medicine, nursing and dentistry). Australia is one of very few countries with an explicit policy to import migrant health professionals. The project plans to assess if the goal of domestic self-sufficiency is likely to be met by 2025 and examine the risk of a ‘two tier’ health workforce developing (with conditionally registered migrants servicing patients in undersupplied sectors and sites). It then aims to propose changes to make the migration and health policy systems more effective and ethical in future compared to Canada (Australia’s key global competitor for skilled migrants), through evidence-based policy reform.Read moreRead less

This project aims to build an evidence base of the prevalence, causes and consequences of welfare stigma in Australia. Welfare policies and proposed reforms aim to reduce welfare expenditure, increase workforce participation, and promote personal and family wellbeing. However, stigmatising attitudes and discrimination towards those receiving welfare benefits may undermine these policy goals: reducing employment opportunities and causing poorer health and wellbeing. Through innovative experimental studies, the project plans to identify ways in which welfare policy can minimise stigma and promote employment. Project outcomes may provide an evidence base for the design of more effective welfare policy.Read moreRead less

This project argues that religion influences urban development in India, and must inform policy. India's scale and speed of urbanisation makes its sustainable urban development critical globally, yet modernist urban planning has failed to address slum growth, poverty, gender inequality and ecological crises. Using interviews, archival research and fieldwork in six walled cities that clearly display the interactions of religion and modernity, this project will show how religion also shapes these issues and must be part of their solution. It will also show how religion impacts power relations in planning, and how engagement with religion can lead to the development of planning policies that respond to the needs of cities.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide evidence about how to improve employment outcomes for people with disability. Nearly one in five adult Australians have a disability and just over half of these are in the labour force; a modest increase in employment rates will have significant social and economic benefits for people with disability and society.
