Quality controlling GPS estimated atmospheric water vapour via stochastic modelling. Signals from satellites of the Global Positioning System (GPS) can be used to estimate the quantity of atmospheric water vapour. Such information is vital to meteorologists for numerical weather prediction, since lack of atmospheric water vapour knowledge is a significant source of error in short term (0-24 hours) forecasts of precipitation. However, to be of practical use in numerical weather models, the estimate of the water vapour content must be accompanied by a realistic, reliable quality indicator. Such quality indicators are not currently attainable using existing GPS data processing methods, with this project aiming to overcome such deficiencies.Read moreRead less
Theoretical and Model Strengthening of Future Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to Yield Improved Geospatial Information for Tomorrow's Society. Oceanic Conditions within Extreme Tropical Cyclones. Australia's tropical and subtropical areas include major infrastructure projects such as the North West shelf oil and gas projects, major mining operations, export ports, natural environments such as the Great Barrier Reef and major tourism industries. All these industries are crucially impacted by extreme tropical cyclones. Despite the importance of these systems, our present understanding of tropical cyclones is incomplete. This project will significantly enhance our ability to carry out accurate engineering design of critical offshore infrastructure, as well as marine forecasts in such environments. As such, the project will have major scientific, economic and social benefits for Australia.Read moreRead less
3D tomographic reconstruction of rainfall using satellite signals. This project aims to use the microwave communication links of low earth and/or medium earth orbit satellites to achieve three dimensional tomographic reconstruction of rainfall. The path loss of microwave signals due to rainfall, known as rain attenuation can be used to measure rain. Similar to using X-ray to carry out human-body CT scans. With the aid of advanced signal processing techniques, the proposed method will achieve 3D ....3D tomographic reconstruction of rainfall using satellite signals. With the aid of advanced signal processing techniques, the proposed method will achieve 3D measurements with resolution and coverage unachievable before, paving the way for innovative water relevant applications such as hydrology and agriculture, and new findings in atmospheric research.Read moreRead less
Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment And Facilities - Grant ID: LE130100136
Funder
Australian Research Council
Funding Amount
$340,000.00
Summary
Mobile weather radar system for advanced environmental monitoring and modelling. High spatial and temporal resolution weather radar data on wind and precipitation will translate to significant environmental model advances. Australian researchers will undertake model validation studies on precipitation, dust storm, and flood prediction under a wider range of environmental conditions and in greater detail than currently possible.
Forecasting and management using imperfect models, with a focus on weather and climate. Research into complex systems is predicted to be the focus of twenty-first century science, since most of the problems of simple systems are solved. Examples include the weather and climate, economies, argriculture, ecologies, the mind and brain, genetics, biochemistry. Confidence in the reliability and usefulness of models will have significant bearing on how these models are used by decision making and how ....Forecasting and management using imperfect models, with a focus on weather and climate.
