Environmental Study of the Wavemaking Characteristics of High-Speed Ferries. The aim is to perform a study of the wave-making characteristics of high-speed ferries of the monohull, catamaran, and multihull type in order to be able to predict their environmental impact on river banks and sea shores. The significance is that a number of ferry services have been curtailed or cancelled as a result of suspected wave damage. The outcome will be a methodology for computing the wave system produced by such ferries in water of any depth. The nature of the rate of decay of the wave system will be included in the analysis.Read moreRead less
Prediction and control of fluid-structure interactions. Fluid-flows create a pressure that can deform the surface of a structure or cause it to vibrate; an extreme example is the fluttering of a flag. Flow-induced vibration of the external panels of vehicles causes damage, noise and can adversely affect performance. This project will develop a wholly new approach for the analysis of these interactions. The versatility and completeness of the approach permits a step-change in the design of panels, reducing material and manufacturing costs without compromise to safety and performance - an immense benefit for the myriad engineered products or structures that feature flow over a deformable surface. Sea surface roughness has a major influence on global climate modelling. This project will provide a better understanding of the variability of sea waves in coastal waters. New technology of HF ocean radar can map wave fields over coastal waters and thus fill a gap between the open ocean satellite measurements and the point measurements from wave buoys. In this project we will improve the analysis of the radar echoes to produce sea wave spectra, and evaluate focussing of waves by complex currents on the continental shelf to help improve wave forecasting in coastal waters. The HF radar will be used to experimentally test current theories of wind wave spreading.Read moreRead less
Powering optimisation of large, energy-efficient multihull vessels, operating at critical speeds. Australia is currently the world leader in the design and construction of large aluminium vessels. The existing fleet of vessels is under pressure from increased fuel prices and regulatory requirements to reduce emissions; this project directly addresses the need to develop new energy-efficient multihull vessels using computations and model testing.
Marine vessel wave wake: Ferry operations in sheltered waterways. This project aims to address one of the biggest risk factors to the Sydney ferry system, by ensuring the waves that new ferries generate are minimised. This would reduce the impact on other users of this busy waterway or damage to the surrounding infrastructure or environment. Modernising Sydney’s fleet of iconic passenger ferries is an integral part of the New South Wales Government’s long-term transport master plan. This would reduce the impact on other users of this busy waterway or damage to the surrounding infrastructure or environment. Modernising Sydney’s fleet of iconic passenger ferries is an integral part of the New South Wales Government’s long-term transport master plan. The project is intended to predict the waves produced by any proposed ferry operation, allowing changes to be made to minimise waves during early planning stages. The new method for predicting the complex wave phenomenon is designed to provide more comprehensive and accurate assessments than conventional technologies.Read moreRead less

The proposed equipment is for increased productivity and enhancing research capability of the Tom Fink Cavitation Tunnel located at the Australian Maritime College.
The cavitation tunnel is used for investigating flows about ships and underwater bodies.
The proposed equipment permits the rapid control of gas content in the tunnel water either dissolved or free as bubbles which together control the nature of cavitation and other two phase flows.
The equipment will significant enhance existing research programs in support of the high speed craft and defence sectors of the maritime industry both nationally and internationally.Read moreRead less
Prediction of Sea Level Change around Australia and its Calibration and Validation by Satellite-Geodetic Measurements. The redistribution of mass and loading due to deglaciation will change the gravity field, spin axis and centre of mass of the Earth. As such, global sea level will not rise by the same amount in all places, and will even fall in some. This project will extend our realistic Earth model, constructed from a previous ARC grant, to simulate such changes in sea level. These simulated values will be compared with contemporary estimates of ice mass balance and temporal gravity changes measured by satellite geodesy. Ultimately, this will allow for more informed management of sea level change in Australasia.Read moreRead less

Improved accessibility, particularly by non-automobile transport modes, is an explicit goal in transport, environment, and land use policies. The hypothesis to be tested is that it is possible to develop a measure to assess the potential of any proposed urban development, whether it be new urban growth or an urban renewal/in-fill project, to achieve sought after changes in travel behaviour that will move urban development in sustainable directions. The proposal develops a GIS-based decision-support system that uses accessibility as an attribute of a land use development proposal rather than as an attribute of the transport system.Read moreRead less

Water Authorities are tightly regulated to guarantee removal of pollutants such as algal cells and toxins, cryptosporidium oocysts, and geosmin from drinking water. Processing options such as membrane filtration are effective but become very expensive when continuously operated to protect against occasional contamination events. This project aims to develop a fully-integrated process combining flotation and ozonation which can be operated continuously when required in a number of different modes to provide a barrier against a range of contamination events. The process utilises much of the existing water treatment infrastructure reducing capital and operating costs.Read moreRead less
