This research will develop new mathematical methods and algorithms that will enable the use of population-level longitudinal studies to model the spatial and temporal deformation patterns in 3D biological objects. Using novel geometric and deep learning techniques, it will create new methods that will allow the characterization of how the 3D shape of objects deforms with ageing, disease progression and interaction with their environment, and the simulation of spatiotemporal deformations in anatomical organs. Benefits include a better understanding of growth processes, predictive models of how degenerative diseases progress and a computational framework that will assist in designing proper mitigation and intervention strategies.Read moreRead less

The project aims to develop algorithms to support the development of robust and accurate computer vision systems. Real-world visual data (images, videos) is inherently noisy and outlier prone. To build computer vision systems that work reliably in the real world, it is necessary to ensure that the underlying algorithms are robust and efficient. The project aims to devise novel algorithms that can compute the best possible result given the input data in a short amount of time. The expected outcomes would support the construction of reliable and accurate computer vision-based systems, such as large-scale 3-D reconstruction from photo collections, self-driving cars and domestic robots.Read moreRead less
Active multispectral computer vision for defence and security. This project will develop new techniques to extract intelligent information from multispectral images in the visible and near infra-red spectrum. It will enable computers to automatically recognise objects, faces and human actions with unprecedented accuracy.

Strategically, our pioneering solutions besides being technically and socially significant, open fresh options for sensor-agnostic data analysis. The technical significance lies through the creation of new technologies for the critical national and global security markets, currently overwhelmed by data. The social significance arises from our solutions being privacy preserving, providing new avenues for the production of novel, socially acceptable products for aged care monitoring. Our methods spearhead future advancement in diverse disciplines due to the wide applicability of the methods to other sensor networks (Square Kilometre Array) and data types, providing new frameworks for addressing crucial problems of data management. Our technological solutions for early detection of disease provide the best opportunity for effective treatment, and provision of strategies capable of assisting individuals. It aims to empower primary care providers and will lead to more effective screening methods and improved efficiencies in redirecting resources towards those whose eye disease is treatable. It will further improve and enable access to specialist eye care for those living in rural, regional and remote locations. The assistive technologies for the blind will greatly enhance the quality of life of the visually impaired, enhancing their quality of life and removing several risk factors. The net annual savings to the Government from these projects would be considerable.Read moreRead less
Person identification from multiple non-invasive iris and face biometrics in video. This project will undertake research to develop a prototype system for personal identification that can be used by law enforcement and security agencies to enrol people at points of entry at public places. The system will non-invasively acquire face and iris biometrics and match them against a database of known persons. This project will undertake research to develop a prototype system for personal identification that can be used by law enforcement and security agencies to enrol people at points of entry at public places. The system will non-invasively acquire face and iris biometrics and match them against a database of known persons. The proposed system can be used in sensitive buildings for access control, eliminating the need to carry access cards or remember passwords. This research contributes to the national research priority of Safeguarding Australia. We will develop new techniques in computer vision and train new researchers in this area.Read moreRead less
Tensor and Hypergraph Methods in Fitting Visual Data. This proposal will put an important class of clustering (extracting data that should fit a geometric model) on a more solid theoretical foundation. This will lead to better understanding of how to certify outcomes, efficiency, reliability etc. The type of clustering under consideration is relevant to many problems in machine learning and computer vision, as well as data mining and a wide variety of other settings.

Successful completion of this work will contribute greatly to Safeguarding Australia, Priority Area 4, and lead to further commercial exploitation on the national and international stages. In particular, we are responding to increasing demand from our partners for sophisticated surveillance systems for infrastructure and public transport. The adoption of these technologies by DTI, with international contracts for video surveillance, positions Australia to gain the leading edge in this niche industry. Additionally we deliver solutions to our end user partners, PTA and WA Police, to facilitate enhanced community security. We will also build research capacity for surveillance technologies through advanced training of research staff.Read moreRead less
