Summary
Achieving high-speed wireless communication networks through joint channel and network coding. This project will develop new coding techniques to increase the data transmission speed of wireless networks. The success of this project will enable a smooth migration from wired to wireless networks for applications that require high data speed like broadband Internet, high-definition video streaming, and health-monitoring system.

Inter-user interference is becoming the dominant bottleneck in state-of-the-art wireless networks. This project aims to address this bottleneck problem by studying a new paradigm, referred to as a Distributed-Input Distributed-Output (DIDO) wireless system, which makes the best use of interference. Results from information theory and modern coding techniques will be advanced to develop new design principles and novel physical-layer coding techniques of DIDO systems, leading to substantially improved throughput, reliability, energy efficiency and robustness. This project aims to develop fundamentally enhanced wireless infrastructure with targeted applications in cellular and wireless networks, satellite communications and wireless sensor networks.Read moreRead less
Compression and communication of single and multi-view video based on overlapping motion hint fields. This project explores a new way of communicating motion for video and multi-view (3D) applications, facilitating efficient interactive access to content. Outcomes will include new compression methods that avoid redundant transmission of motion side information, plus client/server technology that leverages metadata from smart surveillance cameras.

This project aims to improve voice communication in immersive video conference technology for distance-based learning, using classrooms of students. research new theoretical approaches and develop new technology to transform the voice communication experience for co-located immersive video conferencing participants. When participants are co-located, two major audio issues—significant acoustic echo and instability—can arise; these are barriers to the wider adoption of this mode of education delivery. The expected outcome is an immersive video conferencing application deployed by the partner organisation. A key benefit will be a significantly enhanced product that provides a commercial advantage as well as a solution to remote learning for Australian students and educators.Read moreRead less
Interactive and scalable media over software defined networks. A novel API and associated algorithms will be developed to exploit the emerging technology of software defined networks (SDN) for improving the efficiency and responsiveness of interactive media browsing applications. The approach applies to conventional streaming video as well as more interactive services based on scalable media compression and communication technology, notably JPIP (IS15444-9) video. Recent advances in motion coding will be combined with new spatio-temporal transforms to develop an efficient inter-frame extension to the JPEG 2000 standard that is fully compatible with JPIP. Each of these innovations is important in its own right, but together they will facilitate a highly compelling interactive media browsing experience.Read moreRead less
Planning and operational models for food rescue and delivery to the poor. This project aims to develop an innovative holistic mathematical model of the vehicle routing problem for a charity-based food rescue and distribution system. This project aims to develop an innovative holistic mathematical model of the vehicle routing problem for a charity-based food rescue and distribution system. Such a model would aim to maximise societal benefits while constraining costs, and would need to take into account the demand profile for donors and receivers, and the equitable distribution of food. The model developed is designed to mathematically represent the system in a consistent framework so as to develop optimisation models and techniques. The project also seeks to understand the factors that influence the demand to donate to food rescue by organisations and individuals and the demand to request food by welfare agencies.Read moreRead less

Anger has links to many important outcomes in the prison environment, including violent behaviour, institutional conflict and self-harm. The nature and consequences of anger have rarely been investigated for imprisoned offenders and little is known about anger in male Indigenous Australians in prison, despite evidence that anger levels in this group are particularly high. This research will explore constitutive, regulatory, procedural and other aspects of anger with male Indigenous prisoners, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, leading to the development of an intervention that will improve both the wellbeing and adjustment of Indigenous men in prison and rehabilitation outcomes.Read moreRead less

This project will provide Australian companies with the tools to conduct a services capabilities audit. This tool will allow them to identify substantive and dynamic service capabilities that they must strengthen or acquire, in order to remain competitive in domestic and global markets, where consumers increasingly differentiate between organisations by value-adding services that they offer. Australia imports over $40Bn worth of services each year. This project has the potential to increase the domestic and international competitiveness of Australian manufacturers and service industries and contribute to the economy by reducing dependence on service imports, and assuring ongoing employment for Australian workers. The project is significant in that it specifically defines the character of global Internet flows with a possibility of commercial advantage to Australia in understanding how the geography of time zones affects its dynamics.Read moreRead less
Separation anxiety in pregnancy: associations with oxytocin release, attachment styles and mother-infant interactions. This world's first longitudinal study will investigate the role of the hormone oxytocin in maternal anxiety and mother-infant interactions. This project aims to better understand and address the transmission of anxiety and bonding difficulties across generations.
