This project aims to develop an intelligent condition-monitoring system for screening machines which are widely used for classifying mineral particles in the mining industry. This project will develop new vibration-based methodologies and techniques for fault diagnostics and remaining useful life prediction of bearings and gears in situations with multiple complex sources and interferences. The monitoring system, as the expected outcomes of this project, will modernise the current maintenance practices towards condition-based predictive maintenance, reducing unplanned downtime, increasing productivity and reducing maintenance costs for the Australian mining industry. It will also add more value to the Australian manufactured products.

This project aims to develop a new versatile, high-performance microsensor platform and microscopy method for measuring nano-scale structures. The proposed microscopy tool is expected to significantly increase imaging speed and miniaturize system footprint, thereby enabling high-throughput quality control of semiconductor devices. The expected outcome is a highly-scalable and low-cost imaging system that will close the technology gap between fabrication and inspection at the nanoscale. The benefits to Australia should include the potential for commercialization to develop this next-generation microscopy tool in high-value market sectors.

This project aims to develop novel condition monitoring methodologies for the gearbox of large horizontal-axis wind turbines which are widely installed in wind farms for generating renewable energy. This project expects to generate a new diagnostic framework by integrating dynamic model assisted simulations and digital twin-based approaches. Expected outcomes of this project include new vibration-based methods for fault diagnostics and predictions of the remaining useful life of turbine gearboxes. This should provide significant benefits to the Australian Wind Industry by ensuring reliable operation of wind turbines, reducing turbine downtime and reducing operation and maintenance costs; ultimately lowering the cost of energy from wind.

Our understanding of how termites use microvibrations to communicate is limited, as the generation, transmission and detection of these complex vibrations in substrates at the submillimetre scale are unknown. We aim to develop a fully validated vibro-acoustic termite communication model which will be used in Swårmalätørs to demonstrate their ability to synchronise and mimic collective behaviour. This will be achieved by combining novel acoustic levitation, microsystem analyses and electrophysiology to determine physical properties of termite appendages, sensory and behavioural thresholds; and by considering wave transmission characteristics in wood, friction-adhesion at the termite feet, mandible cutting and soldier alarm drumming.

Modelling, Design and Development of a Novel Wave-Energy Converter. Australia has an abundant source of wave-energy commercially untapped due to technical limitations of current wave-energy devices. This project aims to develop a novel wave-energy converter (WEC) that integrates energy capture and electricity generation through a single mechanism. This novel WEC can overcome or significantly reduce the drawbacks of existing WECs, is compact and light-weight (about 30 times less), ensures survivability, and has low-cost installation and maintenance. The project expects to deliver novel theoretical results in fluid-structure interaction, control systems and electrical conversion for WECs and other applications. The WEC will be demonstrated via a tested proof-of-concept physical model.
