New models as tools for defining mechanisms of microbe survival in the urogenital tract. Bacteria that infect the human urogenital tract can cause serious disease and these infections represent a large cost to the health-care system world-wide. This study will focus on how bacteria survive in the human urogenital tract and this will impact on strategies aimed at preventing and treating these infections.
Much of our current knowledge on development of external genitalia (ExG), the penis and clitoris, comes from 20 &70 year-old studies (1); but with significant developments in contemporary imaging and new mouse models, we have new data. We seek to develop the scientific basis for the interpretation of the results of "deep" indentation testing of non-linear elastic (hyper-elastic) materials. Simple tests (such as indentation) produce complex strain fields. Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) is a common cause of renal failure in children. The majority of patients with CAKUT do not know the underlying cause of their renal anomalies. In this proposal we will characterise the developmental events that are perturbed in three mouse models of CAKUT and identify the causal gene responsible in each mouse model. Urinary disorders (such as incontinence, frequently voiding, weak stream, urgency and others) share many risk factors with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and may appear before CVD and T2DM manifest. This proposal will examine which particular urinary symptoms, combined with specific risk factors (e.g. obesity, depression, erectile dysfunction) best predict the occurrence of these high-burden conditions using community-based cohorts of men and women.
