Summary
Obstructive sleep apnoea has variable causes and clinical effects in different patient groups. My research will quantify the contribution of various physiological processes to the development of upper airway obstruction in different sub-types of sleep apnoea and to determine how this affects clinical presentation. I will be measuring a number of physiological parameters, and finding out how sleep apnoea manifests in terms of symptomatology and adverse health effects.

Low blood glucose levels following a meal occur frequently in otherwise healthy people and those who have had surgery for weight loss. It affects quality of life adversely and current management is unsatisfactory. The proposed studies will use sophisticated techniques to evaluate the roles of the rate of stomach emptying and the so-called 'incretin' hormones which stimulate the release of insulin after a meal. The outcomes will have major implications for more rational management.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common and disabling neurological disease affecting thousands of young Australians. In 2011 Fampridine received TGA approval for walking impairment in MS, but its mechanism of action is unknown and its effects on domains other than lower limb function remain untested. Our study will test whether Fampridine improves upper limb impairment in MS patients and will use electrophysiological measures of central nervous system conduction to uncover its mechanism of action.

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the large bowel. It is the result of a dysfunctional immune system that inappropriately targets and damages the colon. There is increasing evidence that gut bacteria play a crucial role in UC, possibly by stimulating inappropriate activation of immune cells. Our aim is to develop a novel mouse model of oesophageal cancer, allowing us to tailor cancer-inhibiting molecular treatments to individual patients by predicting therapeutic success or resistance with the use of cellular markers identified in our animal mode.
