The Australian Dictionary of Biography Online: A Database of National Biography Facilitating Research into Australia's History. The project will publish the sixteen existing and all future volumes of the Australian Dictionary of Biography as a freely available relational database on the Internet. The A.D.B. is a fundamental research tool and teaching resource for Australian history, and a valuable source of knowledge about ten thousand past Australians. An innovative web-publication model will maximise the availability and searchability of the A.D.B., enabling researchers to pose new questions that will yield novel insights into Australian history. The Australian Dictionary of Biography Online Enhancement Project: Additional Search Capabilities and Greater Interoperability for the ADB Online. The Australian Dictionary of Biography Online Enhancement Project will augment the capabilities of the ADB Online. It will provide additional search categories and means of visualising the data in the dictionary's ten thousand biographical articles, enabling researchers to discover relationships, trends and developments, and thus to explore new them ....The Australian Dictionary of Biography Online Enhancement Project: Additional Search Capabilities and Greater Interoperability for the ADB Online. The Australian Dictionary of Biography Online Enhancement Project will augment the capabilities of the ADB Online. It will provide additional search categories and means of visualising the data in the dictionary's ten thousand biographical articles, enabling researchers to discover relationships, trends and developments, and thus to explore new themes and gain new insights into the nature of Australian history and society. Shipwrecks of the Roaring Forties: a maritime archaeological reassessment of some of Australia's earliest shipwrecks. This project will evaluate new ways of investigating the history of Europeans in the Indian Ocean by using the latest technology to evaluate seven Western Australian shipwrecks excavated over 40 years ago. The project will work with emerging technologies to study these significant sites and collections.
PACIFISM IN ENGLISH LITERATURE. 'Pacifism in English Literature' will be a single author monograph examining and analysing English literature from the point of view of classical pacifist thought. It will be a development from my two former ARC-funded books, 'Natural Law in English Renaissance Literature' (1996) and 'Natural Rights in English Romanticism of the 1790s' (2001). A cultural history of West Australian popular music, 1945 to 2010. The Valentines, The Triffids, The John Butler Trio all had their origins in the western Australian musical scene. This is the first cultural history of West Australia's popular music industry. It documents the life and times of its musical artists, bands, managers, recording studios, relevant radio programs since 1945.
Irish Convicts and Early Australian Society: A Reassessment in Two hemispheres. Based on new archival research in Ireland and Australia and the development of a data bank comprising information on more than one thousand male and female Irish convicts who arrived on eight transports between 1800 and 1806, this project examines the process of transportation within the context of a much wider Irish diaspora in the Age of Revolutions. Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia. To co-ordinate, research, analyse, write and develop an Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia. The Encyclopedia will be produced as an innovative multimedia CD-ROM and website as well as a printed version.
Modern human origins and early behavioural complexity in Australia and Southeast Asia. This project tackles a fundamental issue in world prehistory: how and when did humans first cross from Southeast Asia into Australia. Three new archaeological excavations using novel methods of analysis will assess the nature of behavioural complexity and human evolution at the time when Australia was first colonised over 45,000 years ago.
The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature. The anthology will be a major scholarly work. Its publication will stimulate scholarship in the Humanities. The project will also renew mainstream interest in the scope and sophistication of Australian literature. Many new works will be introduced to Australian readers, to education systems and to literary scholarship. The stand-alone anthology of Indigenous literature will enhance the public profile of Indigenous writers and will provide ....The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature. * the reception of Aboriginal art during the twentieth century, and will demonstrate the extent of national investment in this reception;
* the subtle and often ambivalent relationship between the disciplines of anthropology and art (including art historians, artists or curators) in the reception of Aboriginal art, as well as being alert to other factors (eg Aboriginal activism and political processes);
