Beyond Domestic Borders: Transnational Mobility in the Making of Modern Korea, 1920-1945. Locating LGBTIQ+ youth in the archive: Telling new stories for belonging. This project aims to produce the first study of LGBTIQ+ youth in Australia’s past and investigate what these histories mean to LGBTIQ+ youth today. We will generate new knowledge of Australian LGBTIQ+ history and links between historical knowledge and wellbeing in relation to LGBTIQ+ youth. The research focuses on underexplored regional locations and involves developing a pilot museum exhibition. This project aims to produce the first detailed investigation of the acquisition of Indigenous human remains from Australia, New Zealand and the broader Pacific by the Russian Empire during the long 19th century. It expects to generate new knowledge about Imperial Russia's scientific networks, anthropological collections and underlying intellectual traditions. Family, violence and honour: the Walworth Murder. Australian statistics confirm that violence within the family is an intractable problem. Real-life narratives of spousal abuse and murder, including historical cases, provide compelling evidence of the causes and costs of family conflict. This project underlines the ways in which power asymmetries within families can become risk factors for violence.
Early collections of Warlpiri cultural heritage and resulting community access needs in remote desert Australia. Led by Warlpiri elder, Steven Wanta Patrick, this project will assess collections of Warlpiri cultural heritage. It will address the enormous Warlpiri interest in gaining access to their cultural heritage, and using these for local initiatives that improve youth engagement with tradition, dialogues across generations and cultures, and community well-being.
Being Muslim in Eastern Indonesia: practice, politics and cultural diversity. The project contributes to Safeguarding Australia through improved understanding of Muslim communities in eastern Indonesia and training young scholars in this field. Our studies of island society and regional Islamic organisations offer ethnographically informed comparative perspectives on Islamic cultural diversity across eastern Indonesia, including current changes in religious practice and governance.
