Improving Pleural Procedures: Image Analysis And Training.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $94,468.00
    Summary
Currently, there is little evidence to guide the treatment of pleural disease, with common mismanagement and frequent adverse events. This project will develop image analysis tools, a clinical pathway and training to assist and guide clinicians in managing pleural disease, improving the diagnostic yield of pleural procedures, while reducing complication rates. This project will develop image analysis tools, a clinical pathway and training to assist and guide clinicians in managing pleural disease, improving the diagnostic yield of pleural procedures, while reducing complication rates. It will offer a novel contribution to this young but blossoming field of respiratory medicine, ultimately leading to improved care for people with pleural disease.

Simulating And Stimulating The Blood-Brain-Barrier: A Platform For Investigating Non-pharmaceutical Alzheimer's Therapy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $680,758.00
    Summary
Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health threat worldwide. Despite the widespread acknowledgement of this issue, there are a lack of effective drugs that can slow disease progression. This project aims to investigate a new class of non-pharmaceutical treatment methods based on controlled acoustic, electrical and optical stimulation methods to treat and reverse the base causes of Alzheimer's disease.

Targeted Pelvic Floor Muscle Training For Urinary Incontinence After Radical Prostatectomy: A Randomised Controlled Trial With Embedded Physiological Studies

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $966,377.00
    Summary
Prostatectomy is a common treatment for the most common cancer in men. Survival is good, but many develop debilitating urinary incontinence. Past pelvic floor muscle training has had limited effect, but recent work has changed understanding of how muscles control continence and compensate for surgery. This clinical trial compares innovative training individually tailored to optimise continence, usual exercise and no treatment, and aims to identify men most likely to benefit from treatment.

Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound: Safety, Knowledge And Practice Of Prolonged Or Repeated Exposure To Acoustic Waves

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $255,055.00
    Summary
Ultrasound is routinely used for diagnosis of brain lesions amongst newborns. Animal studies have shown that ultrasound can sometimes be harmful to the brain. We currently have very little information on the characteristics of neonatal cranial scans. This project will investigate current knowledge of safety and training via a nationwide survey, analyse the elements of 'typical' scans and measure brain surface heating after ultrasound amongst neonates.

Morphological And Mechanical Properties Of Normal And Spastic Muscle In Children

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $91,749.00
    Summary
Examining muscle structure and function assists in understanding movement. This research will develop non-invasive ultrasound imaging techniques allowing muscle fibre visualisation and assessment of muscle properties during passive length changes and active force production. We will compare structure and function of spastic muscle in children with cerebral palsy and typically developing muscle. The effects of Botox injections on spastic muscle properties will also be investigated.
