Summary
T1D profoundly affects the lives of an increasing number of young people and their families. H The proposed centre acknowledges these challenges and recognises the urgent need for a comprehensive and holistic approach involving a broad range of expertise, methodologies and collaboration. The centre will utilize clinical expertise of the CI’s, generating new knowledge for the successful development and use of technology in closed loop and semi-closed systems in young people with T1D.
This project aims to comprehensively evaluate the role of androgen receptor (AR) signalling in breast cancer by identifying changes in AR signalling and its role in an endocrine resistant setting. Understanding the changes in AR signalling in either treatment-naive or treatment-resistant context would better assist in the identification for opportunities to modulate AR signalling as a therapeutic target in breast cancer.

Summary
Hypothermia, entering phase III trial in Europe, has the potential to slow brain injury after stroke. It will allow existing thrombolytic therapies which restore critical brain blood flow to be used in many more patients than currently possible. However, hypothermia will soak up valuable resources if non-selectively applied to the ~15 million patients who have a stroke each year. We aim to identify biomarkers to test which patients will benefit most and permit the best resource allocation.
The Centre for Research Excellence in Discovering Indigenous Strategies to improve Cancer Outcomes Via Engagement, Research Translation and Training (DISCOVER-TT) aims to reduce the marked disparities in diagnosis, treatment and survival for Indigenous Australians with cancer. Improvements in human health can only occur when the best basic research is tested in the best clinical trials and then applied in clinical practice across the board. Practitioner Fellowships are designed to support people who bridge these areas. Summary
Given evidence that school food policies can improve children’s dietary intake, Australian state governments have launched healthy canteen policies. However, these policies are poorly implemented. This research seeks to assess the effectiveness of an online classification tool in increasing policy compliance. The tool will be embedded in an online canteen system, and will automatically assess whether menu items are compliant as they are uploaded onto the online canteen system.
Prof. Simes will lead and develop research at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre in collaboration with major national and international cooperative groups. Research themes include integrating molecular science with trial design and embedding research routinely in health care. Projects include surgery for rectal cancer; novel targeted therapy in gastric cancer; aspirin to prevent colon cancer; placental transfusion for preterm babies; risk in heart disease; economic assessment of clinical trials.
