Skilling Indigenous Australia: Effective numeracy learning for employment by regional and remote Indigenous students in vocational education and training courses. Increasing levels of Indigenous VET certification will enable Indigenous inclusion in local labour markets, which are currently experiencing skills shortages in education, health, construction and mining. This will reduce welfare dependence and the need for intervention programs, in turn improving Australia's economic activity. This project is a significant collaboration between schools, TAFEs and Industry representatives that service remote areas, which aims to develop a theory about effective numeracy instruction. This theoretical framework will provide strategies for VET teachers and supervisors to facilitate Indigenous student's numeracy learning in a manner that is culturally empowering, builds pride and sustains community linkages.

The impact of environmental alteration on Australia’s biodiversity has poorly understood long-term effects. This project examines the controversial biogeography and evolution of Australia’s biodiversity during the Age of Dinosaurs (mid-Cretaceous ~100 MYA) and their adaptational responses to climatic change. Fossils readily capture the public imagination and thus help promote complex scientific concepts in the global media. This project raises awareness about sustainable use of non-renewable fossil resources through public education and ecotourism fieldwork programs; these will help generate local interest and thus protection of sensitive fossil localities by highlighting them as lucrative tourism assets for regional communities.

Mapping the missing grassroots: ethnographic action study of local grassroots broadband content (co) creation and consumption. This project contributes to the National Research Priority, Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. Innovative digital technologies which contribute to the development of broadband content and uptake of broadband constitute a key technological frontier for Australia. Broadband and digital media, and the overall new media literacies required for their effective use, are a major contributor to national productivity, competitiveness, and growth. This project develops frontier technologies for collaborative production, exhibition, and evaluation of broadband content by grassroots creative producers, promoting an innovation culture as well as exploring innovative uses of broadband and digital media forms.
