The World Trade Organisation and the future of the multilateral trade system. Using a qualitative methodology to investigate the views of trade policy communities in the major players in the World Trade Organisation (WTO), this project investigates how the WTO can be adapted and strengthened to meet 21st century trade policy challenges. The Political Economy of Post-Conflict Violence Against Women. Post-conflict and political transitions are major opportunities for advancing women’s rights and participation. The Political Economy of Post-Conflict Violence Against Women. Post-conflict and political transitions are major opportunities for advancing women’s rights and participation. Yet an apparent spike in sexual- and gender-based violence against women hinders these opportunities once armed conflict is stabilised or regime change is achieved. This project aims to explain the causes of that violence and its consequences for women’s economic and political participation in different environments. It will compare post-conflict, political transition and non-conflict countries across two regions, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and North Africa, examining the gender inequalities, regional patterns, and global forces that appear to heighten violence against women and hinder women’s participation.

Regime interplay: from conflict to integration in overlapping international regimes. This project furthers the National Research Priority of An Environmentally Sustainable Australia, particularly the subsidiary goal of meeting Australia's Kyoto targets. The project will recommend ways of improving the integration of international trade and environmental regimes to enable the Australian government to tackle national environmental problems and risks, such as climate change, and encourage the "greening" of Australian industry without fear of retaliatory trade sanctions or unfair competitive advantages accruing to other nations. Successful national environmental policies, particularly in the complex area of climate change, are dependent upon the integration of environmental and economic policies at the international level.

Clarifying transparency: Chinese aid and trade in Latin America. Consensual understandings of transparency and good governance are crucial to the international accommodation of China's economic rise. Through a quantitative survey and qualitative case studies, this project aims to clarify how these terms generate misunderstandings and hinder potential for dialogue between key U.S., Latin American and Chinese actors.

Australia contains a very large and robust field of hundreds of modern China specialists--as many as all of Europe--but we are very spread out geographically and divided among twenty disciplines. There is a patent, felt need for concerted, collaborative, multi-disciplinary research and analysis, as a wide range of important potential synergies exist.

What determines the political consequences of financial crises? Ideas, institutions, and society over the long run. Recent financial crises have often had powerful political consequences, including political turnover, rising polarisation and social unrest; but these consequences also vary greatly across countries and over time. In a novel investigation of the political aftermaths of financial crises over two centuries, this project will develop a comprehensive understanding of the causes of this variation. Its theoretical significance lies in its investigation of time-dependent processes that have been largely ignored by existing literature: what shapes the duration of political effects, how are societal expectations about government policy responsibilities (re)shaped by financial crises, and how do such expectations affect political and policy outcomes?
