The Indian Ocean Region, of vital geopolitical importance to Australia, is the heart of the Third World - overwhelmed by chronic poverty, precarious political systems, and conflicting ethno-religious identities. This project will document attempts at constructing regional identities and institutions, and facilitate the process of 'building' a secure Region.

The International Law Library on the World Legal Information Institute: new content and facilities for the leading repository and citator for international law: The International Law Library on the AustLII-operated WorldLII system already provides the most comprehensive free-access location of international law research materials, attracting over two million annual ....The International Law Library on WorldLII: New content and facilities for the leading repository and citator for international law. The International Law Library on the World Legal Information Institute: new content and facilities for the leading repository and citator for international law: The International Law Library on the AustLII-operated WorldLII system already provides the most comprehensive free-access location of international law research materials, attracting over two million annual page accesses. This project to transform the Library will expand all its content (international case law, treaties, other key resources and commentary); improve its distribution (for example, RSS feeds for new cases); automate updating processes; add extensive metadata to improve citation histories; and provide other metrics so users can recognise significant materials. Improving the global governance of sharks: obstacles, options and opportunities. Improving the global governance of sharks is critical in light of their poor conservation status and importance for marine ecosystems. This project will make an important contribution to their conservation and sustainable use by identifying obstacles and opportunities for working better with existing laws and making recommendations for reform.
Scaling global labour: the Global Union Federations in Indonesia and India. This project will generate a systematic comparison and analysis of the activities of the Global Union Federations in construction, manufacturing and plantation agriculture, in India and Indonesia. Its findings will enhance our knowledge of industrial relations in both countries, and of labour internationalism.
Maritime legal practice and policy in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf: synergies and challenges for Australian trade and security. The project will analyse national practice relating to maritime claims and jurisdiction in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf. It will identify areas of instability in the region that may pose a threat to freedom of international navigation and trade.
Small mercies, big futures: enhancing law, policy and practice in the selection, protection and settlement of refugee children and youth. This project will assist refugee youth and children who ultimately become Australian citizens or permanent residents. In so doing, it will help to maximise the social benefits that flow from immigration. The project will also help to reduce the risk of social dysfunction that flows from damage sustained in childhood.
