Supporting Older Adults With Dementia With Driving Cessation And Mobility: An Innovative Telehealth Approach

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,868,907.00
    Summary
This program addresses dementia and driving cessation, a significant life event for people with dementia and challenge in primary care. We will translate an evidence-based driving cessation intervention into a telehealth model and implement it in a national cRCT. Expectations are that drivers with dementia will make independent decisions about stopping driving, however interventions are urgently needed to support people with dementia, their families and GPs to manage the challenges.

The Investigation Of Innovative Telemedicine Models To Support Palliative Care Delivery In Rural And Remote Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $86,870.00
    Summary
This project will investigate the impact of videophone communication between patients wishing to remain at home for their palliative care and their outreach nurses in a remote setting. Patients visited at home will be identified by their palliative care nurses and asked to give consent to have a videophone installed. This project will investigate the impact of videophone communication between patients wishing to remain at home for their palliative care and their outreach nurses in a remote setting. Patients visited at home will be identified by their palliative care nurses and asked to give consent to have a videophone installed. The carers and nurses will evaluate the impact of the videophones using a questionnaire at the completion of the episode of care. Because suitable telephone lines are available throughout most country areas and the devices are portable and as easy to use as a telephone the use of videophones between palliative care nurses and remote nurses or between patients, if effective, will be widely applicable.

Telehealth And Advanced CT Imaging Combined Study (TACTICS)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $979,270.00
    Summary
This project aims to converge several acute stroke therapy systems of care to provide the best possible health outcomes for patients living in regional areas. We will implement a proven telehealth program with the aim of providing increased access to thrombolysis through screening with multimodal CT. During this project we will also undertake a nested randomised trial of advanced imaging to identify which is the most efficient imaging protocol to ensure the best possible patient outcomes

The Women’s Wellness After Cancer Program: A National Multisite Randomised Clinical Trial Of An E-Health Enabled Lifestyle Modification Intervention To Improve The Health And Wellness Of Women After Cancer Treatment

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,209,031.00
    Summary
Advances in diagnostics, treatment and clinical practice have transformed some cancers from fatal to chronic and sometimes curable diseases. Many Australian women now live with the effects of cancer treatment and are at risk of cancer recurrence, chronic disease and poor quality of life. The Womens Wellness After Cancer Program aims to maximise the wellbeing of women treated for cancer, utilising internet and Smartphone technology to support them to live healthier lifestyles.

Improving Aboriginal Children's Access To Better Ear And Hearing Health Through Telehealth ENT

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,123,450.00
    Summary
Aboriginal children experience the highest rates of chronic ear disease in the world, with access to specialist ENT care limited by cultural issues as well as long travel distances, if they live in rural areas. This results in children developing hearing loss that could have been prevented with early childhood ENT treatment. This Indigenous led telehealth research, based in NSW, will create an efficient, culturally appropriate hearing health care model for all Indigenous Australians.

Telerehabilitation For Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $697,942.00
    Summary
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a very effective treatment for chronic lung disease, but is accessible to less than 10% of Australians who need it. Telerehabilitation, the delivery of rehabilitation directly into the home using the internet, offers new opportunities to improve access and uptake. This trial will test whether telerehabilitation can improve wellbeing and reduce health care costs in people with chronic respiratory disease living in metropolitan and regional Australia.

A Telehealth Intervention To Delay Functional Decline In Community-dwelling People With Dementia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $476,399.00
    Summary
Telehealth programs are becoming increasingly popular as a way to increase the accessibility of services and reduce the costs associated with health professionals travelling to the client's home. Determining The Cost-effectiveness Of A Novel Australian Stroke Telemedicine Program: CAST Study

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $496,015.00
    Summary
Urgent treatment of acute stroke in rural Australia is problematic. Telemedicine could improve delivery of acute stroke treatments in rural communities. Currently this is being investigated through the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine (VST) program by providing an acute telestroke service in 16 hospitals located in rural and regional Victoria. This project, known as CAST, forms an important sub-study for the VST program since it provides a full economic evaluation of the program.

    Summary
This study will compare the experiences of patients referred for a palliative care consultation who have a face - to - face consultation with a palliative care physician (PCP) in Dubbo versus those whose consultation is achieved via telemedicine with a PCP in Sydney but in the presence of a palliative care nurse in Dubbo. Immediately following the consultations and one week later, a research nurse will interview the patient and their care giver, and the palliative care nurse in attendance and the interview will be audio-recorded for subsequent detailed analysis. It is proposed to conduct 30 consultations in this study, and the results will inform the further development of a telemedicine palliative care consultative service.
